Tonight: Last Forest City Show Ever!

Forest City is a Brooklyn country band with one of the dudes from Boogie Boarder and my buddy Jamen from Regal Degal. If you're lucky you might have caught one of their raucous live shows. The band doesn't play very often and after tonight they'll never play again. Well, maybe they'll play once a year in South Jersey but that's up in the air. This band has been one of my favorites for the past year or so and I highly recommend you see them while you still can, which means go see them tonight or never.

Wild Yaks Played Cameo

On Friday I was checking out the old Facebook feed and I saw a post from Wild Yaks. It basically said they're back (they broke up in June) and were playing that night at Cameo. Prior to the break up Wild Yaks were my favorite Brooklyn band to see live so I was pretty excited to hear the news. I spread the word and easily rounded up some folks to head to the show. Turns out I wasn't the only excited about another chance to see Wild Yaks.

As with any party/show/event on N. 6th we started the night at Zablowski's for cheap pre-show drinks. After the gang all arrived and sucked down a few rounds we headed to Cameo. When we walked in I saw Martin, the drummer, in the crowd so I knew we had some time before they would be playing. What I didn't know was the band that was scheduled before them didn't even get started yet.

I headed to the back room anyway and noticed that the attendance list for whoever this band was was super huge. I walked into the performance room and it was insanely packed. I grabbed one of the free CDs on the table before the door on my way in. I pulled it out of my pocket to see who the band was, The Wicked Tomorrow. On first impression the band was as bad as their name but it turns out it was just the first song. After that the girl/guy duo grew on me and by the end I thought they were alright. The jam packed room seemed to dig them a lot more than me though.

I was dipping in and out of the band room and hanging with friends in Loving Cup, it was also the only place to get a beer that night. Eventually the Yaks headed back and started setting up. They looked a little different though. The only familiar faces were Martin on drums and Rob on vocals and

M.I.A. Playing Free Show At Brooklyn Bowl

Today M.I.A. announced on Twitter that she'll be playing a free show at Brooklyn Bowl on October 6th. It seems that it's a straight up "first come, first serve" kinda deal, so get there really early if you wanna get in.

Katy Perry's Tits Were On Saturday Night Live Too

Katy Perry was on SNL this weekend making fun of Sesame Street pulling the clip of her prancing around with her giant boobs bouncing around all over Elmo. It was a bit much for a kid's show but if the end result is this then fuck it, who cares?

Wild Yaks Aren't Dead, Playing Cameo Tonight

According to the Wild Yaks Facebook page they're back in action and playing Cameo tonight! I've been seeing comments coming through the Facebook feed from some of the band members that alluded to a reunion but until today nothing was confirmed. I kinda figured they'd be back at some point but this comes a bit sooner than expected. Today is a good day. Go see Wild Yaks!

Katy Perry's Tits Were On Sesame Street

Now, I'm far from a prude and I love boobs but is this cool? I mean, I realize that the only reason Katy Perry is famous is because of her rack and therefore it's critical she keeps those things on display at all times but, Sesame Street? She's wearing a see-thru shirt with massive cleavage action on a kids show. It's a bit much, no? Not only that but she's literally running around with her titties bouncing all over the place. Maybe, I'm just jealous that Sesame Street wasn't tittiefest when I was a kid.

Tonight: Spirit Family Reunion @ Living Room

Since you didn't get into the secret Yeah Yeah Yeahs' show why not check out something new? I highly recommend heading over to the Living Room tonight and catching Spirit Family Reunion. I've been raving about this band for about a month now and I'm not stopping any time soon. They're pretty young kids but they play country music that is so damn good and authentic that Hank Williams himself would have been dancing at their shows.

Wanna read about the first time I saw these guys? You will dig these guys. I drug some friends who hate country to their last show and they loved them. It's damn near impossible not to love this band once you see them live.

New Video From OK Go, "White Knuckles"

OK Go has a new video and while I'm not a huge fan of their music, the dudes know how to make a video. This one isn't nearly as spectacular as past ones but hey, it's got little dogs in it so the chicks are going to love it. That's all that matters now, isn't it.

CMJ 2010

Bands playing the 2010 CMJ Music Marathon have been slowly trickling out since August. This year's marathon is scheduled to take place from Oct. 19-23rd all over NYC. Generally speaking, CMJ is a chance for up-and-coming bands to showcase their talent in front of industry folk who are in town for panels and scouting.

However, established bands like The Drums and Surfer blood will be playing this year as well. We're most excited about getting to see Helmet again, maybe Unsane will decide to play too. We also know that Langhorne Slim, Gunfight!, SHAPES, So So Glos, The Rassle and a bunch of our other favorites will be playing too.

We'll give you the heads up once the full schedule is released.

Gang Of Four Announce New Album

Gang Of Four

The great Gang Of Four are releasing a new album in January 2011, entitled CONTENT. It's there first album in 16 years. With most bands I'd be weary of a new album after a sixteen year layoff but this is Gang Of Four. The rules do not apply.

Every bit as powerful and insightful as their classic work, CONTENT, the new album from Gang Of Four, sees founding members Jon King and Andy Gill continuing to deliver intelligent, powerful and liberating rock & roll that is both provocative and simply thrilling. "What we're trying to do is keep it totally stripped down, where everyone in the band makes an equally intense contribution," says King. With the simple but tough and loud sound of drums, guitar, bass and vocals on new tracks like "Who Am I?," "You Don't Have To Be Mad," "I Can't Forget Your Lonely Face" and "I Party All The Time," the songwriting on CONTENT is just as challenging and unconventional in 2010 as it was in 1978.

"What I've been thrilled by over the years is that our music still seems to make sense to our audiences, however old they are, and these days they're mostly under 30," says King. "They tell us that our music means something, that it makes them want to go start a band. That amazes me. I would never have imagined when we started off that we would have this impact after such a long time."

From creating one of music's pre-eminent debut albums (1979's ENTERTAINMENT) to influencing a wide range of punk, post-punk and indie rock bands (R.E.M., Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sonic Youth, Bloc Party, The Rapture, Franz Ferdinand and hundreds more), Gang Of Four have triumphantly defined their place in rock 'n roll.

Set for a January 25th release on Yep Roc, CONTENT is the band's first album of new material in years and was written by King and Gill, and recorded and produced by Andy Gill.

Iggy Pop & The Stooges Played Don Hill's Last Night!

Last night was Fashion's Night Out, which always guarantees secret shows and such all over town. I had heard Iggy might be playing but everyone seemed to think it would be at the Varvatos store. In fact, I even walked by a couple times and it sure looked like they were setting up for something in there. Plus, Varvatos is known for having some awesome shows and surprise guests.

So I was surprised to get word (around 2am last night) that Iggy was indeed playing but at Don Hill's. Don Hill's is far from any FNO shit so it was pretty surprising. Of course, I missed it but I figured it would be cool to share what I could find from the event.

Tonight: Fashion's Night Out; Raccoon Fighter & Radio America @ Lit; ExHumans & Liquor Store @ DBA

Well the big news tonight is Fashion's Night Out. This basically means you get to roam around NYC drinking free booze and pretending you're interested in buying whatever crap the store is selling. Booze Party does a good job of pointing out where the booze is.

Our buddies Raccoon Fighter & Radio America are playing together at Lit. And if you want to stay in Brooklyn then check out ExHumans and Liquor Store. I don't have a flyer or anything for that one.

New Black Angels Album Stream + Video From Letterman (Free MP3)

Phosphene Dream

The Black Angels have been all over the place lately. On Tuesday they played a secret show in the LES then last night they played Letterman (video below). All of this is to promote the new album, Phosphene Dream, coming out on September 14th, which you can now stream in it's entirety on MySpace.

Das Racist Releases Two New Videos & A Video Game

Das Racist has been on a role lately. About a week ago they dropped a video for "Who's That? Brooown!" which is crazy. It's an 8-bit video game adventure which you can actually play on their homepage. But that ain't all. Now they got another video, this one is for "Ek Shaneesh." I'm digging both songs and videos but "Who's That? Brooown!" is the clear winner here, and not just because it's a video game.

How fucking rad is this?

Black Angels "Secret" Show Last Night (Photos & Video) + Playing Letterman Tonight

Last night I voyaged out of the house for a "secret" Black Angels show at the Angel Orensanz theatre. I've never been to the venue before and I had very little details about the event. All I knew was Black Angels were playing. Whether or not anyone else was, or not, I had no idea.

When I got to the show I was happy to see the line outside wasn't too crazy. Once I got inside I was very much impressed by the interior. The stage has a massive church facade as a back drop. I was also impressed by the fact there was free booze (Hob Nob wine & Coors Light). I ran into some comrades who informed me that only Black Angels were playing, which was just fine by me.

They started playing not long after I entered. The first half of the set was their new album, Phosphene Dream, in it's entirety. The songs were good but, of course, lacked familiarity. For this reason I can't tell you the name of the super awesome, and surprisingly upbeat, tune they played about halfway into the album. I also can't tell you the name of the song they closed with which had an intro that is exactly the same riff as "Police Truck" by Dead Kennedys, but way slowed down. Overall, I dig the new stuff but of course was looking forward to hearing some old gems.

After they played all the new tracks they took a break. It was around this time that I discovered that the upstairs balcony had it's own little bar hidden

Tonight: FREEwilly First Thursday @ Coco66; Gold Whistle @ Gallery Bar

If you're in the mood for a good show then Coco66 is your spot for the night. FreeWilliamsburg put together an awesome lineup with Beach Fossils, Apache Beat and more. There's also an open bar if you get there early (really early, 7pm). If you're more in the mood for an insane party than check out Gallery Bar for Gold Whistle. I could go over all the details and people involved but it would just take too damn long. Check out the flyer for more info.

Chikita Violenta Is Playing Mercury Lounge Tonight + Tour With Ra Ra Riot

View All Photos | Chikita Violenta

Chikita Violenta is an indie band from Mexico I've been meaning to write about for awhile. I saw that they were playing tonight so I figured it's now or never. Their tunes are light and airy, even when they speed things up and start rocking.

I have a feeling these guys might get fairly big so if you check them out at Mercury Lounge tonight in three years you can brag to your friends about how you saw them when nobody knew who they were. Your friends won't believe you because you make up bullshit stories all the time but at least you'll know the truth.

Starting on September 27th they join up with Ra Ra Riot for a tour all the way across the good ol' US of A. I'd list the tour dates but that means copying and pasting from MySpace and that just gets sloppy so just go and see for yourselves.
