Concert Of The Year: Gogol Bordello @ Warsaw

Holy shit! Easily one of the best shows I have ever seen in my life. I swear it - I've seen hundreds upon hundreds of bands and this was definitely top 5. What a fucking band Gogol Bordello is, I can't believe they aren't huge yet. No one around now can even come close to performing at the level Gogol does.

If you're not familiar with Gogol Bordello they play a brand of music they call Gypsy Punk. Basically, they have acoustic guitar, violin, accordion, washboards but also distorted electric guitar, bass, and rock/reggae drums. It's an interesting mix of punk rock and gypsy folk music, overall it sounds more eastern European then punk. It gets the Hungarian half of me all worked up.

Anyway, I wasn't even supposed to go to this show. I contacted their management but no one got back to me. Then I asked around the office but no one knew anyone that could get me in. Then my friend Nicole says she has a plus one and invites me along (see I told you I'd mention you - thanks).

We met up at the Warsaw around 9:45 or so - right as the opening act finished their set. Like always we headed to the bar for some of those $4 polish brews and some $2 Sparks - I love the Warsaw. Then we just waited for Gogol to take the stage. I knew it was going to be a good show, you could just feel it.

When Gogol took the stage the place went crazy. The first thing I noticed was the old badass violin guy was wearing a Slayer shirt - pretty cool for a dude that looks 60. I can't remember what song they opened with (no short term memory) but it started kinda slow. The crowd was singing along but everyone was kinda just standing there tapping their feet. A few songs in the pace started to pick up and their was some dancing but it was still fairly tame.

It all started to get kinda crazy when the girls came out. They were fucking awesome and really put on a hell of a show. Half of the crowd at the Warsaw was dancing but they were dancing in place. Shortly after the girls came out the little pudgy dude with the weird rat tail came out and started doing this crazy Sean Paul type shit. More and more people kept coming on stage and the crowd was eating it up.

About an hour and twenty minutes after they started they left the stage. The whole place started cheering and chanting "Gogol". Usually towards the end of a show, even good bands, I'm pretty much ready to go. But no one there had any interest in leaving. We all knew that it would be a long time before we get to see a show of this caliber again. So everyone cheered and screamed and the Gogol came back for their encore... set.

Yes - after playing for over an hour they went into another set, almost as long as the first. It was amazing the place went totally fucking berserk. Aside from the lack of a crazy pit it reminded me of seeing Madball at CBGBs. Instead of pushing and punching EVERYONE was dancing - the whole fucking place. I've never seen anything like it before. And I'm not talking standing in place dancing I'm talking dancing like there's no one watching you type shit.

Everyone was flailing about, hopping up and down, hands in the air, and beer was spraying all over the place. These conditions normally mean some people are being dicks but this was a total celebration. It was like being at some crazy eastern European wedding reception and the whole place is hammered drunk.

during one of the last songs (maybe it was the last) one of the girls threw the marching band bass drum she was playing into the crowd. Then she jumped on the fucking thing and surfed the crowd on it - so awesome. Then she kneeled down and started banging on the drum - it must have sucked to be the guy underneath. Of course the king of crowd surfing himself, Eugene, had to join in so he jumped on the drum as well. Check out the picture it was incredible.

When the show ended everyone had huge smiles on their faces. Outside everyone was talking about how great of a show it was. Seriously, this is one of the best shows I've ever seen. You absolutely must see this band, even if you hate their music - that's how good they are. I don't think it's possible to not see them and be completely amazed by how good they are. The Gypsy Punks own the stage - go see them.

The Phoenix Foundation

Today I got something in my mailbox from +1 about a band from New Zealand called The Phoenix Foundation. I never heard of them before so I checked out the MP3 link in the letter. At first I wasn't feeling it much, a little too sensitive for my liking. But then I noticed about half way through I was kinda diggin it. I don't love this but it's pretty good and I thought I should share.

This is really badass, these two guys created a light saber fight scene. The choreography is far better than anything I've seen in Star Wars.

Wolf Parade @ Webster Hall

Yesterday I was lounging about at my place when I happened to walk by my calendar and noticed some scribbling on the date. Apparently, I had tickets to see Wolf Parade and totally forgot about it. I got on the phone and started calling around to see who wanted to go but it was late and everyone was doing shit already. So I ate one of the tickets and gave it to my roommate.

We got to Webster Hall at about 9:30 after a quick Taco Bell run. I finally tried one of those things they have where it's like a Mexican pizza wrapped in a tortilla - pretty good shit. Anyway, we get inside and I ask a few people where we're at as far as the lineup was concerned. We just missed Holy Fuck - who I haven't heard yet but I wanted to see.

So the wait began... and then came Wol... no just a roadie... song just ended, people cheering it must be... a break between the house tunes. It started to get ridiculous and then finally after, at least, a half hour the band took the stage. Then the power went out on one of the amps - get on with it. I was really tired from doing nothing all day and I wasn't in the mood for this shit. After another ten minutes it finally started - for real this time.

About halfway through the first song I noticed something odd - I was terribly bored. I really thought I would love Wolf Parade live. I mean I like the album and everyone told me how amazing they were live but no... I wasn't digging it. I was up front and everyone was dancing and I felt alone in my opinion. Then I moved back about 25 feet. These people looked even more bored than I was.

The band wasn't sloppy and they were pretty active onstage. I really can't figure out why it wasn't that good. I mean it didn't suck, the other Wolf band (Wolfmother) was far worse live, but it just didn't do it for me. I was actually impressed by a few things. The singer/keyboard guy was on fire, for a guy behind keyboard stacks he was going nuts. The other dude playing the Theremin was fucking awesome. I usually think those things are tacky and unnecessary but he made it work. Oh, sorry I don't know their names - that would actually involve research.

Overall, I don't think you should go see Wolf Parade. I know they played tonight and some of you reading this were probably there but it was a waste. I will not be seeing Wolf Parade (MP3) again... unless they open for Tiger Bear Wolf (MP3).

Last Night: FreeNYC & Loft Party

Last night I hit the FreeNYC party at Galapagos. We got there about 10:45, fifteen minutes after they tapped the first keg - it was already dry. Luckily they had a back-up, it took them about 10-15 minutes to tap it but then we were good to go. This was the first time I ever had Sixpoint beer and I have to say it ain't bad. No one else I was with agreed with me though.

Now that I had my beer I started checking out the scene. It was pretty fucking lame to be honest. The one man band guy was spinning records and playing bass and playing with his Mac. Unfortunately all the sounds coming out were weird blips and stupid shit like that. Eventually he started spinning actual music but I had enough of that place by then (translation: free beer ran out) and hit the road. We grabbed some booze, hopped in a cab, and headed to the"Broke ass hoez" loft party in Bushwick.

FreeNYC party

I have no idea what time it was when we got there but it wasn't too late yet. We walked into this place and I wasn't all that impressed. Let's just say the word loft was used very loosely. This was an apartment and it wasn't very big, at least not for a party. I really wasn't having much fun at first but it picked up big time. The whole building ended up being part of the party and people were all over the place drinking.

There was PBR all over and people started getting semi-nude. At one point some dude in a thong was on this guys shoulders on the dance floor. My roommate was on the dance floor with two girls without shirts on. It started to get a little LNP. Unfortunately, my camera died and I didn't get any of the funny shit on film. One of my roommates freaked out and left - he still doesn't know how he got home. This was a damn good time and I need to go to more parties like this.

Cheap & Sleazy - Tonight

Tonight is the big 2-year anniversary party for FreeNYC. If you don't know of FreeNYC then you're missing out. Last summer and fall when I was down and out FreeNYC and MyOpenBar kept my liver pickled. This party is going to be fucking awesome and of course totally free. That means the cover is free, the bands are free, and most importantly the booze is free. You can not miss this shit, period.

Men Women & Children @ Annex

Last night I headed to the Annex with some people to check out Men Women & Children. I'll be honest, I was going more for the party then for the band. The band was playing the new "Ruff Club" party and it sounded like a good time. Anyway, I was sent the bands album a few weeks ago and I really wasn't into to it too much. It was just way to emo sounding for my tastes. But I figured what the hell, even if the band sucked there was still a party going on.

I got to the Annex with some friends around midnight. We headed for the bar and got some drinks - of course they were out of the cheap shit. We hung out for about 20 minutes and then, while I was downstairs taking a piss, the band took the stage. I immediately noticed how these guys looked, not at all emo. They all looked like LES glam hipsters. The music itself was very indie dance rock, this was a much different band than what I heard.

I was very impressed by how tight the band was - sounds like they practice their asses off. Great stage presence too, lots of dancing around and interaction with the crowd. Speaking of the crowd they were going completely apeshit. Apparently these guys have a pretty loyal following. At one point the band started playing some "ape" song and were doing monkey moves on stage - funny shit. The singer's voice can get a bit annoying some times, he has a very high pitch voice and isn't afraid to show it. He has a Perry Ferrell thing going on, both in appearance and sound.

I had a great time seeing this band and I recommend catching them live. Hell, they played their last song with a bubble machine going. Bubbles was everywhere, so much cooler than those fucking lame ass smoke machines (you're old news smoke machine). This band was made for the downtown Fat Baby/Lit/Rififi scene.

Men Women & Children were lucky enough to tour with Gang Of Four on their big comeback tour. The band is from the NYC area and one of the members used to be in Glassjaw (I think). Which makes it even more odd that they play glam indie dance rock.

Last night was my first time at the Annex - I was expecting it to be much bigger. It's a cool place though and I dig the stage set up - small and tight. The crowd is forced to be right up there and it just makes for a better show. My only complaint with the place is that it's too narrow, moving from front to back is a major pain in the ass. Oh and the stage lights are fucking god-awful, they need to go. I guess that's two complaints, sorry for lying back there.

This is where I'll be tonight peeps. Need to see what all the fuss is over Men Women & Children. Plus this seems like it should be a good party. We'll see how it goes - I should have pics and words up tomorrow.
