Raccoon Fighter Residency Starts Tonight + Nominated For Deli Mag Band Of The Month

My homeboys Raccoon Fighter kick off a month long residency (unfortunately it's February so that means 3 shows instead of 4) at Cake Shop tonight with Turkuaz and Lily & The Parlour Tricks. They've also been nominated for Band Of The Month by Deli Magazine. They're up against some chick named Allison Weiss who has about 8,000 fans/followers on Twitter & Facebook and has her own fucking iPhone app. As such, they will need your vote if they're going to take down this social media wizard (can girls be wizards?).

Vote For SHAPES.

Our pals SHAPES are up for band of the month on Deli Mag. They're already in the lead by about 100% percent but you should go vote for them anyway. We've been telling you chumps about SHAPES for over a year now so you should be familiar with their sound but if not check them out now. SHAPES has played a couple of Ski Club shows and their singer, Fanelli (who is one of the best frontmen in NYC, I might add), has also DJ'd our dance party, Smell The Glove.

Beach Fossils Played Brooklyn Bowl 5/13

Kate checked out one of The Deli mag shows at Brooklyn Bowl last week...
------------------------
Thursday night I checked out deli fest at brooklyn bowl. Deli magazine was founded by Paolo Degregorio 5 years ago and focuses on local nyc bands. You can also find issues in various cities such as LA, Nashville, Chicago, SF, New England, Portland, Philly and Austin.

I arrived at brooklyn bowl just as Mon Khmer played their final two songs. The last song kind of reminded me of an Alberta Cross song "Taking Control." I was super bummed that I missed these guys.

Midnight Masses was up next. I was expecting a little more from them overall. There was a lot going on at once up there so I wasn't sure where to direct my attention. There was some chick playing the tambourine with a guitar strapped to her back, I felt it was a little unnecessary. The lead singer was banging the hell out of a drum, I don't know, it was just a little too much. I guess their sound wasn't very cohesive. But, they had really good voices. I feel like maybe if they ditched some instruments their voices wouldn't be over-powered by sound.

Beach Fossils played last. These guys were so good. I feel like a lot of the bands that I've seen lately have had a 60s surf sound to them. They reminded me a little of The Drums. These kids had everyone dancing (Yeah I danced a little at brooklyn bowl, get over it). These guys rocked and I can't wait to hear more from them. Oh yeah, immediately following their performance was ?uestlove DJ'ing, double score!

Saturday Day Shows, CMJ 09.

The day shows today are sick. There's just too much to do. I'm skipping the Fader Fort, where I basically lived last year during CMJ, for the superior lineups of these 3 shows.

12:30-2:30: Brooklyn Vegan Day show at Pianos, free Bloody Marys if you get there when the doors open. BEAST, Moondoggies, and Surf City are supposed to play during that time frame.
2:30-5:15: Deli day show with free gourmet food. During this time frame they have Gunfight!, We Are Country Mice, Freelance Whales, Emanuel And The Fear, Drink Up Buttercup, Elizabeth & The Catapult, Local Natives. WOW!!! That's one hell of a lineup. By the way Freelance Whales are the best band I've seen during CMJ.
5:30-whenever: Impose day party at Don Pedros. Not sure who will still be playing this late but there's a shit ton of awesome bands playing this day party and it's on the way home. Overall this might be the best day show of CMJ 09, if you dig Brooklyn bands. You'll also get to see JEFF The Brotherhood, who destroyed at Piano's.
