Free Tickets To OK GO + We Saw Black Lips On Thursday 4/29

Last Thursday I was at the old office in Union Square worrying about whether or not I'd be able to get into the free Black Lips show at Knitting Factory later that night. I was so worried in fact I cut out a little early just so I could go home and get changed before the show (I had a meeting earlier and was dressed kinda spiffy).

I left my office and hauled ass to the L train at 14th Street. It was about 5:30 or 6pm at this point, the height of rush hour. I walk down to the crowded platform and towards the end of the train. On the huge map I spot a white envelope with writing on it. I'm a curious bloke so I walk over to see what we've got. On the envelope in black ink I read:
Free tix to OK GO! (Sold Out Show) tonight...I can't go. You go, OK go! Please take if you're going to show. DO NOT RESELL - Cheers
On the back it also said, "Good Karma. I [heart] Brooklyn." By now at least 50 people must have seen this envelope but thanks to Giuliani's many years of scaring the living shit out of people no one touched it. Surely, it must be Anthrax or something, right? But fuck it, I'll bite.

I grabbed the envelope and held it up to the light - looks like tix to me. I opened the envelope and there they were, sure as shit, four tickets to OK GO. I would be lying if I said I didn't

Amon Amarth & Holy Grail Played Irving Plaza 4/25

Last night we headed over to Irving Plaza to check out Viking metal legends Amon Amarth, Celtic metal Swiss band Eluveitie and LA-based NWOHM revivalists Holy Grail. Believe it or not the show actually seems to have started on time, which means we missed a couple songs from Holy Grail. Given my new party, Smell The Glove, is all about hair metal and NWOHM tongue-in-cheek goodness I was pretty excited to see these guys.

We walked in mid-song, I wish I could tell you what song but I haven't heard much from these guys. What we did hear was pretty fantastic in that campy metal kind of way. I like a band that knows how to have a good time and doesn't take themselves too seriously and that can certainly be said for these guys. It seems like an odd pairing with the other two bands but considering there aren't many contemporaries out there right now I guess you have to start somewhere. The set was awesome but I'd love to see them play a dingy little LES joint.

Up next was Eluveitie who play a weird Celtic metal complete with lutes, fifes, mandolin and all types of other traditional instruments. Considering I've never even heard of these guys it took a little getting used to. After a few songs I started getting into it, at least at points. Some of it was a little too out there for me but when they nailed it I was pretty impressed. Being Scottish/Welsh/Irish I'm way into Celtic music and some of the songs really incorporated it well with the heavy stuff and at other times...not so much. The closing tune was especially awesome, whatever it was.

Finally the kings of Viking metal were up. Around this time I look over to the right side of the balcony and saw Howard Stern writer and former Death/Iced Earth drummer, Richard Christy. As soon as Amon Amarth got started Richard was air drumming and head-banging like a mad man. It was pretty awesome!

Amon themselves are fucking amazing and kinda funny too. I wasn't expecting humor from a Scandinavian death metal band but the singer was saying some pretty funny shit and was way entertaining between songs. The first few tunes were a bit too "metal by the books" for my taste but the precision was impressive. Then they started into some of their more recognizable tunes about Odin, Valhalla and the whole raping and pillaging shit.

They ended with some awesome violin outro and all the heavy stuff dropped out. Then the lights dimmed and the band stepped back into the shadows. The violin continued to play and build momentum. Then all of a sudden the band emerged from the shadows and blasted into some insane heavy stuff all in one smooth motion. It was beyond impressive, something like that takes years of playing together to nail so perfectly.

After that song the band left the stage and the crowd went crazy, demanding an encore. Amon Amarth came out and played another 2 or 3 killer songs and then took their bows and departed, off to rape and pillage the next town.

They just announced the lineup and since this is a Brooklyn site and Brooklyn people love this shit here you go. If the screeching jibberish and 12 minutes of nothing but feedback are kept to minimum then I might even attend - but I can only handle so much "art", what with being a dumb hick and all.

City & Colour @ Knitting Factory 3/19

On Wednesday I was at work planning on an exciting night at home watching a movie. Then I stumbled upon a listing for the Knitting Factory - City & Colour was playing a sold out show! Which is kinda crazy because I had no idea that C&C had a big enough following in NYC to sell out KF. Of course being that it was sold out and I just heard about it I was kinda screwed but I managed to get on a guest list last minute and scrapped my plans in front of the tube.

If you're not familiar with City & Colour it's basically the singer (Dallas) from Alexisonfire. He's been writing and recording solo shit for years and has a crazy following in Canada. But he hasn't really done shit in the states. In fact he said the KF show was his first in the US - which isn't true because he played SXSW but I think he meant the first show of a headlining US tour.

If you're a fan of AOF then you might not dig C&C - it's super mellow and folksy, not heavy at all...ever. Then again if your favorite part of AOF music is the pitch perfect voice of Dallas then this is your shit because it's all him.

I just recently got into C&C so I'm not super familiar with the songs so I can't tell what the set list was... not that I ever do anyway. But I'll tell you a bit about the show. When Dallas first came on stage he was joined by some of the dudes from the opening band. They did some "plugged in" songs together, which was odd because Dallas is usually doing the singer/songwriter bandless thing. The songs sounded pretty good beefed up a bit but everyone was waiting for him to put down the electric and pick up the acoustic. One quick note, he said that he never practices with those guys and that they were just winging it, which is impressive.

Anyway, they did about 3-4 songs and then got off stage. From that point on it was all Dallas (except for the last measure of the last song). Like I said I don't know all of the names of the songs but I recognized a bunch and was singing along to most. Dallas is a fucking fantastic musician in every way. Of all the dudes in all the bands in the screamo/emo/metalcore/whatever world that I could see blowing up it's Dallas. He's just that much better then everyone else and he has perhaps the best voice in music right now... yeah I said it, the voice of an angel even.

Towards the end of the set he said that if you knew who he was you might recognize the next song. At this point he went into an acoustic version of "Boiled Frogs" by Alexisonfire, which was super awesome. However there are a shit load of AOF songs I would have preferred but whatever, it was really good. After that it was over, except for the mandatory encore.

The show was amazing, his voice was perfect, his potential is unlimited. I really was impressed and you absolutely must see him live if you get the chance.

Alexisonfire @ Knitting Factory 6/12

On Tuesday I went and saw one of my favorite bands, Alexisonfire, at the Knitting Factory. I was very excited about this show because it's been a while since I've seen AOF and they are fucking excellent live.

We got to the show right before Emmanuel went one. I headed to the bar for their set because, well... they suck. After a PBR and about 25 minutes it was over and Alexis started setting up. We waited for everyone to clear the floor to go smoke and drink and grabbed a spot against the wall up front.

A few minutes later the room filled up and the band came onto the stage. Once they started the place exploded. The beauty of and Alexisonfire show is EVERYONE there knows the words to every song. The crowd gets so into it when they play because they have super loyal fans, like myself.

The thing AOF is known for is being regular dudes so when they play it's like an old school hardcore show in that everyone hops up on stage with them and sings along. Not that anyone can come close to matching the near perfect voice of Dallas but it's all in good fun.

The set was short as all hell but they played some great songs and closed with "Accidents" which of course got everyone going crazy. Afterwords the crowd started chanting "One more song, One more song" over and over for about 5 minutes. Here's the thing though... they weren't headlining! This was a Funeral For A Friend show and everyone wanted an encore from Alexisonfire. I've been to lots of shows and the only time I've ever even heard of that happening was when Skynyrd opened for the Who (except Skynyrd actually played the encore).

After the the show I was outside talking to a business associate who was at both shows (they played the night before too) and he said Alexisonfire blew everyone off the stage both nights. And just like tonight half of the crowd left before FFAF ever even struck a note.

The point is that Alexisonfire is one of the best bands out there right now. If you haven't heard them yet I highly recommend purchasing some albums and concert tickets.
