Netflix Arrested Development Was Awesome

I finally wrapped up watching the new season of Arrested Development. I didn't expect much based on my own natural cynicism and the reviews seemed to affirm my suspicions. After watching the first two or three episodes I wasn't very impressed but I wasn't quite let down yet either. Once the stories started coming together and the bigger picture became more apparent I was hooked. Each episode was better than the last.

Some people had issues with the fact that each episode focused on a single member of the family and, at first, I too had concerns. However, the way it was done was perfect! My only issue is that I felt the series could have benefited from a family focused episode for the finale that tied everything together. That's not to say it didn't come together but it was odd having it all resolve through an episode dedicated to George Michael.

My only other issue is that I felt the portrayal of Michael Bluth didn't quite fit the character from previous seasons. He seemed a little too desperate at times and, in contrast, overly cocky at other moments. Michael is supposed to be the mild mannered character that comparatively seems normal but that wasn't the case throughout the Netflix series. Maybe that was intentional but it felt a bit off character.

Otherwise I thought the series was fantastic. The writing was brilliant and I might even say the laughs came at a faster pace than previous seasons. I don't know if they plan on another season but I would love to see it. Although, it would be better to release each episode on a weekly schedule. I think the reason for the negative reviews was solely a matter of people powering through all the episodes in a single sitting and not letting things sink in.

Game Of Thrones Finale Was A Snorefest

Last night I took a break from watching the NBA Finals to check out the season finale of Game Of Thrones. After last episode's blood bath I had very high expectations for the finale. I'm not going to post any spoilers here so don't worry. Actually, nothing really happened of interest so there isn't much to spoil.

The finale was slow paced and kind of boring compared to the rest of the season. It was nothing more than a setup job for the next season, which is obviously needed but probably could have been done in a more exciting manner. They jumped around a lot trying to tie up any loose ends and it took away from the pace of the show. The final scene was just plain stupid, so incredibly boring and kind of goofy if you ask me (you didn't but I'm saying it anyway).

I truly look forward to next season but I wish I had a better taste in my mouth to go out with. This season of GoT was like eating a slice of pizza; it's delicious as soon as you take a bite, with a couple extra delicious bites where you get the toppings, and then at the end you're left with the crust. Sure, some crust is pretty tasty but compared to the bites with cheese and sauce and toppings it's just kind of bland. Unfortunately, given the shape of a pizza the most boring bite always comes at the end. That's Game Of Thrones, yup... pizza.

VICE's New HBO Series Premieres Tonight

Last night I went to the screening party for VICE's new series which premieres tonight on HBO. It's very similar to the travel guides and the MTV series but it seems a little more journalistic and edgy. The episodes we were shown last night included interviews with the head of the Taliban in Afghanistan, child suicide bombers, North Korean escapees (still en-route to freedom) and more wild shit like that.

VICE goes where no other news outlet has the balls to go. Whether you can call them "news" is questionable, I suppose, but either way it's interesting. Say what you will about VICE the magazine but the TV programming they've been creating recently is fantastic.

The Vice Guide To Everything

Last night we attended the screening of the new MTV/Vice series The Vice Guide To Everything (premiers Dec. 6th, 11pm on MTV). The show goes all over the world exposing weird customs and debunking myths. I love the VBS documentaries so I was looking forward to seeing what this new series was all about. The show is much like the documentaries but much lighter. It's the Vice attitude and boldness but with an MTV sense of humor.

Of course, I had my concerns about MTV being involved but about 5 minutes into the first episode all concerns were put at ease. Frankly, it's one of the best travel shows I've ever seen and that's because they go places every other show wouldn't dare - North Korea for example.

Things I learned: North Korea is just as weird and scary as you would expect, maybe even more so. Yemen on the other hand looks like a rad place and now I want to visit. The Russian Mafia is even more terrifying than you thought. And finally, the coolest dude in America lives in Detroit and his name is Jay Thunderbolt.

Speaking of Jay Thunderbolt, the man himself was hanging at the after party at Lit. We over to say hello and ended up partying with the guy all night. He's one bad ass dude! We started talking music and turns out he loves Van Halen and hard rock. Carlos (who I throw Smell The Glove with) showed Jay a picture from Smell The Glove, it was of one of our go-go gals with her boobs out. Jay then one-upped Carlos and busted out his camera and proceeded to show us about 100 nude pictures of girls who dance for him doing all sorts of weird shit. We also hung out with one of the producers of the show and he told us that when they talked to Jay about flying to NYC he asked how many guns he could bring onboard and if they could book him a smoking seat. Apparently he hasn't left Detroit in 20 years. After his episode airs I have a feeling Jay might become a bit of celebrity.

We had a killer night partying with the Vice crew and especially Jay Thunderbolt. Thanks for all the free booze Vice!

Conan Announces Name Of New Show

Well, I'm not really sure if this is news worthy or not but hey, we haven't heard from old Cone Bone in awhile so why not?

Saved By The Bell Fever Hits NYC

First it was the ever excellent appearance by Mark Paul Gosselaar, as Zach Morris, on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Bravo Jimmy, you've done 1 thing right so far - way to go buddy.

And then the other day I got an email that said Mr. Belding in the subject line. Now I thought it was just another hipster DJ with a shitty pop culture name. Today I actually opened that email and fuck-me-sideways, it's actually about Mr. B! Dennis Haskins, better known as Mr. Belding, will be hosting on June 19th at frat boy central, Porky's NYC.

Now I'm in no way endorsing that joint but well, how often do you get a chance to drink with the principal? Bonus: Maybe an aging Sigma Chi will give you swirly when go to take a piss - just like old times, aye?

Andy Rejoining Conan In LA

Yesterday I got a text message from my brother telling me Andy was going to reunite with Conan. I thought it was just a bullshit rumor but apparently it's truth.

Part of me is looking forward to a future with Staring Contests but part of me is worried. You see Conesy came into his own when Richter left. He had to step it up since he no longer had someone to fall back on. The difference between him being good and him being great was the loss of Andy.

So I'm curious to see how this works out. Conan has become the late night favorite on his own and has developed a bigger, bolder persona. What's going to happen with Andy back on his couch? Especially now that Andy has had a few shows of his own. This isn't going to be the same two awkward nerds who are just happy to be there. These guys are veterans now, which means this is either going to be gold or it's going to be a disaster but there's no way it's going to be the same as it used to be.

Punk Week On Craig Ferguson w/ X, NY Dolls, & The Damned

Despite having one of the lowest rated late night shows ever apparently Craig Ferguson has decent taste in music. This week tune in to the show and catch X, New York Dolls, and The Damned! That's pretty exciting shit - too bad you have to sit through that terrible show for one song. Actually, he's not that bad I guess - seems like a nice enough guy. It's not easy going head to head with Conesy.

Tues Oct. 28th : X
Wed Oct. 29th : New York Dolls
Thurs Oct. 3oth : The Damned
Friday Oct. 31st : The Damned
