Last night I went over to Santos Party House to check out King Khan & BBQ Show with Bloodshot Bill. I showed up right before Bloodshot Bill was scheduled to go on and the place was packed. Bloodshot came out in his trademark pajamas and went straight into his Tazmanian devil act. The snortin', gruntin', spittin' one-man show wowed the crowd, as he always does.
I've seen Bloodshot Bill many times but it's always been to crowds that already knew and loved him. This time was different as it was very clear that most of the crowd had no idea who this madman was. After a couple of songs he clearly had won them over and a few people in the crowd started dancing. Then he hooked them in with his singalongs.
After Bill cleared the stage, and I grabbed a fresh beer, the room filled in even more. I don't think I've ever seen Santos Party House so packed before. While Bill was on stage there was a 9-foot high totem pole looking object covered in sheets. Prior to the headliners coming on King Khan came on stage and revealed what was under the cloth - a giant disco dick! You heard me right, not a disco ball, a disco dick. It was a glorious sight to behold.
A little bit later BBQ came on stage dressed in his crazed genie outfit. Then they started jamming - BBQ singing the sweet stuff and King Khan growling like rabid wolf. It was at this point that, despite seeing many King Khan shows and one or two Mark Sultan shows, that I realized I never saw the two together before.
As soon as they started all Hell broke loose. People were crowd surfing, there was a mini mosh pit going, girls were dancing on the side of the stage, beer was spraying all over the crowd - it was pure madness. If you hit mute and just looked at the crowd you would have thought it was a punk rock show. In reality it was dirty ass rock n' roll played by two masters of the genre. It was one of the best pure rock n' roll shows I've ever experienced. I'm a huge Bloodshot Bill fan and I always feel bad for whoever has to follow that dude but King Khan & BBQ did quite the job. Hot damn, what a night!

Tonight: Subhumans @ Santos Party House
There are quite a few decent shows tonight but the only one we're listing is Sub-fucking-humans! This might be the most punk rock band in history. And despite being crusty old dudes they will put on one of the best shows you've ever seen. I got to see them at the old Knitting Factory a few years back and it was fucking incredible. Anyone who makes any claim to punk should go see this band tonight.

Tonight: Cerebral Ballzy @ Cake Shop; JEFF The Brotherhood @ Santos; The Dixons @ Union Pool
Our favorite thrashers are back in NYC and they're playing Cake Shop tonight. Not the best venue for a band like Ballzy but it is what it is. The always awesome JEFF The Brotherhood are playing Santo's Party House. If you're itching for some real deal country then check out The Dixons at Union Pool.

Tonight: Gogol Bordello @ Webster Hall; Tigersapien @ Santos
The always amazing Gogol Bordello are playing night 2 of 3 at Webster Hall tonight. My homey Leonard (who works at the sausage shack outside of Webster Hall) said last night was amazing. Brooklyn Vegan has more about last night as well. A little further downtown our boys Tigersapien from Philly are playing at Santos. While I've yet to see them live I've been telling people to keep an eye out for these dudes for almost a year now. So go check them out tonight.

The Phenomenal Handclap Band Played Santos
Kenya stopped by The Phenomenal Handclap Band show at Santos last week.

The Phenomenal Handclap Band
Record Release @ Santos Party House
6/25/09
Cluster fuck at the door over RSVP reduce priced admission vs. actual free comps aside - added to the one hour delay on the door opening - getting in was worth the wait. First time at Santos. But when I saw the Greek columns, neon lighting and heard the techno beat thumping out of the sound system, I thought I'd walked into the wrong place. It was interesting. I half expected people to be handing out glow sticks and blowing bubbles. But the place was filled with preppies and hipster kids. Sort of good-naturedly bumping their heads along in time and tapping their Chuck-clad feet.
We all knew by then, of course that this was the day a legend died and I was half expecting an all night MJ tribute via mixed and mashed Jackson classics. What I got was an eclectic combination of dance beat boogie I'd never heard mixed in such a way I didn't quite know how to respond to. Featured DJs Tim Sweeney, Mike Simonetti, Tim Love Lee, Smallchange, and Amir were responsible for this. One of them spun "The Way You Make Me Feel" and that got the crowd jumping and singing.
Well, after what seemed like five hours to me, TPHB finally emerged from behind a black curtain engulfed in a modest cloud of smoke. Dressed to the nines in hippie-hipster garb complete with tambourines, long hair and bell bottoms - they got right down to it. The set was phenomenal, yeah. The sound was fantastic. Santos has wonderful acoustics in that place. Keyboard, bass, guitar, drums - put through the paces. Solos out of this world like you couldn't believe. How cliche and silly would it be for me to say I wanted it to be Woodstock in there? They were the perfect blend of dance rock, funk, soul and disco. Some slow, some earth-shatteringly fast paced, they plowed through jams like "Testimony" "Baby" and "15 to 20".
The band called for a moment of silence for Michael, which would have been a complete respectful success if some asshat hadn't shouted "Fuck Michael Jackson" into it. The offender was hissed into submission and the show went on.
The actual complete make-up of TPHB is something like 20+ with contributions on the album being made by members of rock ensembles the likes of TV On The Radio, Mooney Suzuki, and The Dap Kings, to name a few. The self titled debut album is chock full of funk meets psychedelic rock cuts like "You'll Disappear" and "All of the Above". The band is currently on tour in the UK, which include a number of popular festivals such as Wireless, O2 and Latitude. The Brits will probably eat it up because they love anything different (read: refreshing) from that post punk brit rock they're used to over there.
Cheers and good luck to The Phenomenal Handclap Band.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs Played A Secret Show
Like most of you I chose to avoid the secret Yeah Yeah Yeahs show last night because, well, it was bound to be a clusterfuck. When a band that big plays a venue that small, Santos Party House, how can it not be? Well apparently EVERYONE thought the same thing because all reports I read said that there was barely a line and you could just walk right in practically. So if you're a YYYs fan then make sure to give yourself a swift kick to the ass for missing out.
I wasn't there and don't have any knowledge for ya but these guys do...

2 Live Crew Playing Santos' Party House Saturday
This is kinda awesome. The infamous 2 Live Crew will be playing a 2AM set on Saturday, or I guess Sunday actually. I'm not sure I'll still be able to function by then but damn is that going to be fun!
