Knife Fight Happened 2/4

On Thursday we trekked out to the middle of god damn nowhere for one of the better parties of 2010 so far. 171 Lombardy is out there to say the least but the beauty of it is anything goes. No neighbors wining about noise and no coppers driving by spooking the kids. And that's a good thing, for the most part.

We showed up early to take advantage of the free Colt 45 (which didn't last very long). It was probably 9:45 and the place was empty but that was fine by us. Every 15 minutes or so a burst of people would arrive, which makes sense since a shuttle bus was running every 15 minutes from Lorimer.

By 10:30 or so there was a decent crowd but the free beer was long gone. Leaders went on soon after. I've never heard these dudes before but I was digging them. Imagine if Black Sabbath decided to play nothing but songs that sounded like "Planet Caravan" and that's kinda what we're talking about. My only complaint is they were a little too jammy and the vocals just didn't match the style of music at all.

After the set I hit the pisser and there was some broad from some porn site trying to get dudes to whip their dongers out. She was like lady Bronques or something. There was all types of random weird shit going on too, like the raving Viking.

Next up was Boogie Boarder who are always good fun. I was up front for the first song or two but then nature called, fucking swill beer. Honestly, I think I spent half of there set in line for the can so unfortunately I didn't really get to see all the action. By the time I got back out to the floor there was a pretty big crowd that I wasn't yet drunk enough to fight through so I hung back and worked on my sobriety.

After BB the Ballzy boys took the stage. Cerebral Ballzy always bring the ruckus but there was something in the air on Thursday and you could tell it was gonna get crazy before they even started. About 30 seconds before they started I turned to my homey Sean, who had never seen Ballzy, and I said "All hell is about to break loose." Almost immediately after this they burst into the first song and the floor fucking erupted in chaos. A massive pit opened up and everyone was bouncing around and having a fucking blast. I remember seeing my pals in the pit pushing around with big smiles on their faces and these are dudes that don't like thrash or hardcore at all. Ballzy fucking rule!

After Ballzy the Death Set were up. I hadn't seen these cats in a long time and was pretty stoked about it. Again, as with Ballzy, all hell broke loose. There were literally people swinging from the rafters. The ceilings had a series of pipes and other shit hanging down and people were fucking swinging from them, it was quite a site. The performance and the crowd were fucking cool but the music seemed way more electro then I remember Death Set being. Maybe I'm wrong, I was pretty drunk by then.

We drank a lot of beer and a lot of whisky by this point and were getting bored. Not that the party died down or anything but we had been there for many hours and were drunk and antsy. So we bailed before Japanther went on and headed to Boulevard Tavern where we made a new friend. Hi, Sweet Tits (or was it Sugar Tits?)! Anyway, the party was a fucking rager and 171 Lombardy is a killer place for a party. Now I just need to convince my pussy friends it's worth hiking out to the middle of nowhere.

Tonight: Knife Fight w/ A Shit Ton Of Good Bands

If you're not familiar with the Brooklyn music scene but you're curious as to what all the fuss is about then come to this show. These bands (Death Set, Cerebral Ballzy, Japanther, Boogie Boarder, & Leaders) define the Brooklyn scene and this party defines the DIY craziness in all it's glory. What to expect? Expect sweaty drunk punks, cheap shitty beer, loud music, bloody noses, stink, holding it in, and leaving with an STD and wet clothes (beer, sweat, etc.). Yeah, I'd say that's a fair assessment. If you only go out once this winter you should make it this one.

The venue is in the middle of nowhere so take advantage of the free shuttle bus or ride your silly bike (not that bikes are silly, just yours). The shuttle details are on the Knife Fight website. Also, there's free booze for like 2 hours or something.

Tonight: My Birthday w/ Sigmund Droid, Hank & Cupcakes, Cerebral Ballzy, Radio America, & Forest City

Instead of creating a new post I'm just changing the date on this. So it turns out there's literally nothing else happening tonight. This is the only party in NYC. Weird, huh? I know it's hard to believe but it's true. All the listings on other website are Republican/Nazi/Communist propaganda. I'm the only on you can trust. So here's the info again...
--------------------

For the first time ever I'm having a public party for my birthday. I asked a bunch of bands to play and I think the lineup is pretty solid and fun.

Hank & Cupcakes: If you enjoy fun then this should be your favorite band. They've played 2 BSC shows in the past and were amazing both times. You will be dancing, I promise.

Sigmund Droid: These dudes have been one of my favorites for years now and have also played 2 Ski Club shows in the past (including the first ever). I'm not sure I'd be having this show if they couldn't play.

Cerebral Ballzy: This band is just fucking awesome! High energy thrash / skate punk. For those of you who know me it's pretty crucial that at least one metal/punk band plays my party and these guys are the best around.

Forest City: One of the first bands I reached out to about this show was Boogie Boarder but they couldn't play because of the Monotonix gig on Saturday. Then I was talking to my buddy Jamen and it turns out he just started playing in a band with one of the Boogie Boarder dudes. I went and saw them at Union Pool and it was fun so I asked them to play. They're a little bit of country and a little bit rock n' roll (sorry).

Radio America: Homeboys. Some of my best friends are in this band. Have known these dudes for years. Two of them used to write for Ski Club. I went to high school with one of them. This was a no-brainer. I mean they were going to be there hanging anyway, might as well throw some guitars on.

Cutie & The Catfish: CANCELED

DJs Yoshi Knicknock & Joe Eyeball: Philly DJs I'm related to. They know how to get you dancing. Lots of classic soul & motown, punk, garage, oldies, etc. Good music for a party. ***Update: There might be an issue with setting up turntables at the venue so might just be an iPod thing, which sucks but whatever.

It's going to be $3 at the door and please give a couple more bucks if you can. The bands are getting paid from the door and $3 ain't much so please be generous. Also, I might add another band but I can't say who yet.

***Update: Think about the band I've written about the most lately. Got it? Well they might be stopping by to play a few songs!

Tonight: Famous Class Party!

The Famous Class crew are having a party tonight at LPR. Boogie Boarder, Darlings, Snakes Say Hisss, & Tony Castles are all on the bill. Yeah buddy! And it will only cost you a single $8 bill.
Speaking of Boogie Boarder, one of the BB dudes is in Forest City who are playing my birthday party on Friday with Sigmund Droid, Cerebral Ballzy, Hank & Cupcakes, & Radio America (and yes, I will figure out a way to work my party into every post this week).

Boogie Boarder & Forest City Played Union Pool

Saturday night, after an epic 20-mile bike ride, I headed over to Union Pool to check out my buddy Jamen's new band. They're called Forest City and it was their first show. One of the dudes in the band is also in Boogie Boarder. Did I mention they also played? Well they did.

Forest City was pretty awesome. They play a mix of rock and country and are a lot of fun. Once they play a few shows and tighten up their sound a bit they're going to be awesome. All of the components are there already. And frankly any band with Jamen on drums has a pretty good chance because he's the best damn drummer in Brooklyn, and you can quote me on that.

After Forest City's debut an older ska band came on. Yes, a ska band at Union Pool. Turns out one of the dudes in the ska band is the brother of one of the Boogie Boarders. I should mention now that I hate white-boy ska. Of all the genres of music it's the only one where I don't like a single band (except Pilfers, but their singer is Jamaican). So it pains me a bit to say this but they were good, really good. They were playing tons of instruments and beat boxing and other weird shit. They were clearly well practiced and experienced musicians which is rare these days. I don't know what they were called but they were good.

The only issue with the ska band was they played for a very long time. The reason why was that Boogie Boarder was short a member. Will was playing at Bruar Falls with Tony Castles. Everyone hung out for awhile and then Will came barging through Union Pool with guitar in hand and made straight for the stage.

This was my first Boogie Boarder show, which is kinda crazy all considered. I heard they're one of the best live bands in BK and based on the four or so songs I heard they're certainly up there. Unfortunately because they started so late I had to leave halfway through the set. But what I saw I liked, a lot! And Cyrus is a fucking beast on drums. Between the deranged look on his face and the extreme violence he hits his kit with you would think that a drum set murdered his puppy when he was a kid or something.

I'm sorry I had to bail early but I had fun while I was there. Oh and the Union Pool taco truck needs to get their shit together. The tacos have sucked lately and they're smaller. WTF?

Boogie Boarder "Bio Hassle" (Video)

Boogie Boarder recently released a video for their song "Bio Hassle". The whole thing was recorded in, on, and around my friend Jamen's van. It's a killer song and the video is pretty awesome. Keep an eye out for Jamen, he's the dude driving.

Boogie Boarder- Bio Hassle from Cyrus Lubin on Vimeo.

While we're talking about Jamen's van let me tell you a little story. About 5 years ago I lived on S.5th & Wythe and my brother used to park his van under the Williamsburg bridge. One night it got broken into but since there was nothing to steal the dude just took a big dump in the middle of the floor. It sucked but was pretty fucking funny at the same time.

About a year ago I was in Philly visiting my brother and he gets a text message from an unknown number. It said something along the lines of "Someone broke into my van and took a shit!". I checked if I had the number stored and turns out it was Jamen. Only it wasn't a nice smooth turd like my brother came across - it was gnarly diarrhea blasted all over the walls and roof of his van. Someone must have ate a lot of tacos that day. Anyway, if you notice in the video the walls are stripped, that's because it was easier to just rip out the lining then clean the anal blast.

So that's my story, much funnier if you know these people. Nonetheless it points out the apparent BK trend of breaking into and shitting in vans.

I'm moving today so you'll have to hit this one without me. Nonetheless this is certain to be one hell of a party. A bunch of good bands plus food, booze, and ice cream.
