New Year's Eve In NYC

First of all if you plan on going anywhere near Times Square tonight stop by a pawn shop on your way, buy a cheap gun and blow your stupid brains out. That said there's plenty of good shit going on tonight.

If you've got the balls to brave the city then I suggest hitting Don Hill's for the Rated-x/Trash NYE party with Team Robespierre. Aside from that most of the parties that have caught my eye are going down in Brooklyn. I was going to put together a huge list of parties but it looks like my homeboys over at MyOpenBar and Shaw Promotion have already done that.

NOOOOO!!!! They're Pulling The Plug On SPARKS.

Whenever I plan on going out all night and I want to make sure I have fuel in my tanks around 2AM I down a couple of cans of Sparks before I head out. It's become a bit of ritual at this point. Sparks is an acquired taste but to those of us who have acquired it today is a sad day. The Man is banning Sparks and ALL other caffeine infused alcohol.

While I realize this shit is not at all good for you - you know what else isn't good for you? ALCOHOL. So we're banning the use of a mild stimulant but the POISON we're putting it into is fine? Now, that's not to say I have anything against booze, in fact, I love the shit. But why the fuck is the government stepping in over fucking caffeine?

Seriously? The shit in coffee and soda and chocolate and McDonald's hamburgers is getting banned from mixing with booze? That's god damn segregation if I ever saw it - I thought we've moved past that shit.

Well, I'd love to rant more but I have to go down to the beer distributor and buy two dozen cases of Sparks. Which I'll now refer to as Ebay gold.

Bush VS. Shoeman, Animated Gifs

Boing Boing has an awesome post with a bunch of funny Bush gifs. I mean we all knew this was coming and I have to say these are pretty good but I think there will be better ones popping up soon.

Rated-X/Trash NYE Party w/ TEAM ROBESPIERRE

The downtown party legends are teaming up to bring you a crazy as fuck New Years Eve party. I look at NYE party listings all damn day and I can tell you that unless you're down with the collar popping set then there isn't much to look forward too. But now you got Team Robespierre playing on New Years! That's going to be fucking madness. And if you buy a ticket before the end of the week it's only $10, which is like $30 less then anywhere else. Unless of course you plan on spending NYE on your couch. In which case a bottle of Andre and some Beefaroni will run you about $6.50.

Bill Murray Parties With Hipsters

I'm sure you've heard the news that Bill Murray has been hitting up loft parties in Bushwick and other random shit like that. People are making out like he's some creepy old man or something and I think that's a crock of shit. I really don't see the big fucking deal here. Let the man have some fun.

He's 58 years old, not 80, and he just got divorced. I would be party hopping with 25 year olds too if I were him. It's not like he was fucking molesting broads or anything. The point of my rant is Bill Murray is fucking cool so leave the guy alone. Bill if you're reading this let's grab a beer!

Duff's Moved. Dimebag Tribute On Saturday

I found out a couple weeks ago that the best metal bar in NYC, Duff's, was moving. What I didn't realize was that it happened this past weekend. While it's a bit of a bummer they left the old N. 3rd spot it's kinda fucking awesome that they moved pretty close to where I live! Now I can go drink cheap booze and listen to Pantera whenever I want (and not be alone). The new Duff's is located at 168 Marcy, near Broadway.

While we're on the topic of Pantera Duff's will be hosting a Dimebag tribute party on Saturday. Let's not forget one of the best guitar players, and all around good dudes, in metal history. Of course, I'll be at a fucking wedding in Jersey but have a Blacktooth shot for me.

Free Download: Vice Holiday Sampler + Raveonettes MP3

Times are rough, you probably lost your job (if you had one to begin with). So free shit is especially appreciated these days. Say thanks for Vice for putting together a nice holiday sampler with tracks from Black Lips, King Khan, Dark Meat (my new fave band), and more. Sure, you probably illegally downloaded these tracks months ago but it's still a nice gesture.

TVOTR Acoustic Collection

Aquarium Drunkard put together an amazing post with five acoustic TV On The Radio tracks. Honestly I didn't think it was possible for TVOTR to get better but hearing these songs acoustic really blew me away. I listened to "Blues From Down Here" four times in a row.

Snot Back, Lynn Rolling Over

During the 90's shit fest of nu-metal and alterna-rock there was one band that somehow remained punk. Sure they hung out with Korn and Limp Bizkit but so did everyone else back then. The truth is the only bands out of that lot that I'm not ashamed to say I was into is the Deftones and Snot. Deftones turned out to be the lone great band from the bunch.

If any other band had a chance of surviving it was Snot. Snot were the punk rockers of the lot. Everyone else had roots in metal, hardcore, and rap but Snot rep'd the punks. Sure it was nu-metal but it wasn't the same as the rest.

Lynn Strait, singer of Snot, quickly gained a reputation as being one of the nicest people in the biz. Everyone loved this guy, even Sharon Osbourne. He was one of those totally irreplaceable frontmen. So, of course, like any beloved person he died well before his time. I believe it was 1999, or so, in a car wreck. The metal and punk community got together and released a tribute album to him. I mean, how many people get tribute albums?

It saddens me to say that Lynn, the irreplaceable, has been replaced. Not only has Snot reunited with a new singer but the guy is a fucking goon. The guy sucks! And it proves one thing that everyone already knew - Snot wasn't shit without Lynn. There's a video of their first show and without Lynn even the old songs just sound like some average tough guy hardcore band. It's fucking shameful.

Punk Week On Craig Ferguson w/ X, NY Dolls, & The Damned

Despite having one of the lowest rated late night shows ever apparently Craig Ferguson has decent taste in music. This week tune in to the show and catch X, New York Dolls, and The Damned! That's pretty exciting shit - too bad you have to sit through that terrible show for one song. Actually, he's not that bad I guess - seems like a nice enough guy. It's not easy going head to head with Conesy.

BSC Parties: Need Bands & DJs

I've decided to start producing events in Brooklyn, and maybe on occasion in the city but probably not. Anyway, I've put together a little team of people to make shit happen. Now all I need is bands and DJs. Sure I know plenty of both and I'll be talking to them but I'd also like to get some people I haven't been in contact with involved. If you're interested email me with the SUBJECT LINE: Booking. And include a link to your MySpace page. Also tell me about some shows you've played.

E Town Concrete Reunion Show - Tix On Sale

I know a lot of people hate this band and that's fine with me. I grew up in Jersey and there was no band that better represented growing up in Jersey in the 90's then ETC. They looked like the people I hung out with and they sounded like the people I hung out with.

Their songs were about drug dealers and thieves and trying to make it to the top when everyone said you couldn't. That's exactly what I dealt with back then and those songs spoke to me and inspired me. We liked ETC because we were ETC, and some of those guys still are. I've since moved on, I don't hang out with thugs in the bad part of town anymore - I'm too old and soft for that shit these days. Nonetheless I'm excited to see E. Town again, I think this will make show number 15 or 16 for me. Too bad its at Starland - $10 beers and in the middle of nowhere.

BandToBand.com = My Favorite Site

I was recently introduced to an awesome website called BandToBand.com. It basically creates a family tree connecting bands via members. It's kinda crazy seeing some of these connections. For example The Bee Gees are only 8 bands removed from Slayer. Which means someone in Slayer played someone, who played with someone (and so on) that was in the Bee Gees. How fucking awesome is that? Nile is only 9 bands removed from Muddy Waters. Buddy Holly is only 9 removed from Integrity!

Shit is crazy... and fun! It also shows you the linking band member and the album they shared. It's cool because there's all types of random ass bands that had some pretty major dudes in them that I never heard of until this site. So yeah, it's also great if you want to know what weird ass side project shit Jello Biafra or Dwid has going on.

TK Webb And The Visions: MP3s & Shows

So I've heard the name TK Webb a million times and have def heard some songs in passing. However, I never really sat down and gave the songs a proper listen - until this morning. I'm digging it so I thought I'd share some info and music that was just passed along to me.

TK Webb and The Visions

October 24 – Music Hall of Williamsburg (Kemado CMJ Showcase w/ Dungen, Marissa Nadler, Headdress, Muslims, Children, Cheeseburger)

Pigeon Detectives "Say It Like You Mean It" Video

A few years ago, I'd say 2004, my brothers band (Cutie & The Catfish) was playing a show at The Continental. It was one of their first gigs in NYC and there weren't many people there. Amongst the few were a group of English guys who seemed really into the show. Afterwards they came up to us and began to tell us how great they thought the show was and that the Catfish should come over and play England.

You see, these English blokes were in a little known band called The Pigeon Detectives and they could help out with gigs across the pond. After a night of heavy drinking with our new British pals we exchanged contact info. The plan was to take them up on their offer but unfortunately being poor doesn't make overseas travel very easy. We stayed in touch for a few months but it never worked out.

Since then The Pigeon Detectives have blown up! They're a pretty big deal in the UK and are getting big here in the states as well. They're a nice bunch of guys so I'm happy to see them succeeding. Of course I'm a little pissed my brothers band didn't make the voyage and possibly share in the success. But the point is these guys are class acts and really fucking good at the music thing. Check out their new video - it's jolly good!

Franz Ferdinand Playing Music Hall On October 8th. Happy Birthday To Me!

I wanted to do something cool on my birthday, October 8th. I talked to some promoters and looked into some restaurants and really something was missing. Then I tune into BrooklynVegan this afternoon and I see that Franz Ferdinand is playing Music Hall on my birthday. YES! That's what was missing, an awesome concert. Somehow there are still tickets for this show so get them while you can. They're $30 after all the surcharges and bullshit but fuck it, whatever. I've wanted to see this band since I first heard then when I was wee intern at Sony Music. Now I get to see them on my birthday...awesome!

Flipper Drop Out, Municipal Waste Added To Fun Fun Fun Fest

If you hadn't heard already, SF punk legends Flipper have cancelled
their 30th anniversary tour this fall, after bass player (and founding
member of Nirvana) Krist Noveselic left the band.
I'm not sure why they
can't get someone (anyone) to play "sex bomb," as I wouldn't call
Flipper super technical, but alas.
Subsequently, they've cancelled Fun
Fun Fun Fest as well.
As unfortunate as this is to myself and other
Flipper fans, we've already filled the slot...Municipal Waste.

For those that don't know the speed metal, thrashcore of Virginia's Municipal Waste, you're missing the world's best party punk to date.

The new millenia's answer to DRI and Suicidal Tendencies, complete with
flip bill caps and stage dives galor. This band brings as much fast technical hardcore as they do fun.

Get ready to get stomped on, as Municipal Waste makes their way down to
Texas just to play Fun Fun Fun Fest!!

Municipal Waste
http://www. myspace. com/municipalwaste
http://www. facethewaste. com/

BTW, I'll be sending all the additional add ons to fun fun fun fest this
next week, after ACL weekend.
So keep you eyes peeled for many more to
come.
We'll have another list of a dozen or so amazing touring and
local djs, bands, comedians and more...

Thanks, Graham

Tonight: Andrew W.K. Piano Performance

Most people know Andrew W.K. as the party guy with the blood stained shirt. While you expect fist pumping electro-metal stuff you wouldn't expect a night of piano improvisations. See, Andrew is a classically trained pianist. I've been curious what kind of skills this dudes has on the ivory for years.
