Video: Bloodshot Bill at Union Pool
On Saturday we went to Daddy Long Legs release party at Union Pool. The always mind blowing Bloodshot Bill was opening. I saw Bloodshot Bill for the first time back at the Norton Records party that The Sonics played. He totally stole the show then and he did the same on Saturday.

Tonight: BSC Presents Personality Crisis w/ SHAPES, EULA, Ritz Riot; K-Holes @ Union Pool
Start your night by hitting Union Pool for Summer Thunder. They've got the always awesome K-Holes playing on the patio in the yard. I'd guess they play around 8pm or so. Then head over to Shea Stadium for the Brooklyn Ski Club curated edition of Personality Crisis. As always SHAPES are headlining. We've also brought in a couple of our favorite local bands, Ritz Riot and EULA. This will be super fun. '

Tonight: Cerebral Ballzy @ Cake Shop; JEFF The Brotherhood @ Santos; The Dixons @ Union Pool
Our favorite thrashers are back in NYC and they're playing Cake Shop tonight. Not the best venue for a band like Ballzy but it is what it is. The always awesome JEFF The Brotherhood are playing Santo's Party House. If you're itching for some real deal country then check out The Dixons at Union Pool.

Tonight: JEFF The Brotherhood @ Union Pool; Wild Yaks In Greenpoint;
It's Halloween but I'm not really feeling it this year. People out there on the streets seem to feel the same way. Maybe the moon is in a weird position but the consensus seems to be that Halloween sucks this year and not in the appropriate vampire sense. So you know, maybe catch a show or something instead.

Tonight: Ra Ra Riot & Motel Motel Release Parties With Vampire Weekend, Chairlift & Violens!
Tonight we've got two awesome bands, Ra Ra Riot and Motel Motel, throwing record release parties in Brooklyn. Ra Ra Riot will be DJing alongside their buddies Vampire Weekend at Brooklyn Bowl, which is free and has some kind of Cabo Wabo tequila deal. Motel Motel is having their party over at Union Pool with DJ sets from Chairlift and Violens. That one costs $8, which is kind of a bummer.

Unsane Played Union Pool 2/12
I got kinda busy this past week and forgot to post a recap from the Unsane show last Friday but here goes. I heard through the wire that the show sold out and they only had 30 tix left at the door. First of all I had no idea that there were even advance tix to begin with. So now at 7PM I rush over to Union Pool to make sure I get in. No one was there yet! I'm in right?
I struck up a conversation with the barkeep and he informed me that there were actually only 20 tickets left. That's when I noticed Chris Spencer, vocalist of Unsane, was sitting next to me at the bar. He told me that he set aside 10 of the 30 for people he knew. Shit, me chances of getting in just dropped a bit but I was still the only one there. My buddy Carlos showed up soon after and we had a few beers. We kept asking when the ticket dude was going to get there but to no avail. Dude, just wasn't around yet.
So we drank and kept an eye on the outside for a line to form. People were filling in now and we were watching the yard. We noticed people out there but from the inside it in no way looked like a line so we had another beer. A friend who was involved with the show told us since we were the first ones there we'd get in, even if tix sold out. I've heard this before and had it not workout so I kept watching the line anyway. I wasn't missing Unsane even if I had to fight my way in.
I ran out of cash and headed outside to hit the ATM in the yard and noticed the people outside were in fact in line. Fuck! They were about 25 deep or so. I jumped in and shot Carlos a text to get outside. He came out and the line started moving. after what only looked like 7 or 8 people through they told the rest of the line tough shit and fuck off. We were worried, very worried.
Then we heard a "Yo!" and looked up to a waving hand...we're in! We got our wristband and grabbed another brew in the saloon (that's what I call the band room). The first band started up soon after. We weren't impressed so we headed to Fette Sau for some food. When we got back Made Out Of Babies were just starting. The singer is a very cute chick but again, we weren't feeling it. Some of the songs were cool but a lot were a bit too "90's metal" for our liking. Back to drinking in the main bar!
We had a few and stumbled back into the saloon for Unsane. Fucking UN-fucking-SANE! We were super excited. Carlos had never seen them before and I hadn't for 2 years. This band inspired the hell out of me in the mid-90's and were one of the bands that got me playing music in the first place. The video for "Scrape" made them instant legends amongst metalheads, punks, and skaters alike. I was stoked to put it mildly.
The crowd was older then I expected and was a curious mix of aging hardcore dudes, beardos, Joe Schmoes in Mets hats, and hipsters rediscovering their inner metalhead. When they started the set everyone kinda just stood there - no pit, no pushing, no stage diving goons - nothing. It was fucking refreshing.
The vibe of the show was more like being at a practice in the Unsane garage then a proper show. They were cracking jokes with friends in the crowd and just having a good time. It was so laid back and they seemed so happy to playing together again.
The intro to "Alleged" was about 10 minutes longer then normal because Chris couldn't find his harmonica. When he finally did he came over to the mic and took a minute to remember how to play his part. Once he finally blew into that thing an unfamiliar sound came through the mic. Chris got a big smile on his face and his band mates just laughed, "Wrong key guys, sorry" Chris said into the mic. The crowd got a good laugh out of it while Chris went back and found the proper key harmonica. This time he got it right and one of the best Unsane songs ever was rolling along.
They played quite a few songs from Scattered, Smothered, and Covered, which is one of my all-time favorite albums. Halfway through the set as they played classics like "Alleged" and "Scrape" the crowd started getting wild. It wasn't much of a pit but some pushing and pogoing going down. The closed the set with my absolute favorite Unsane Sang ever, "Get Off My Back." If you've never heard it well it builds up for a few minutes and then explodes with the only 4 words of the song, you guessed it, "Get off my back!" Then after the tension is released it mellows out only to go at it one more time. It's the perfect closer and they extended it out an extra ten minutes or so and just jammed. It was amazing. The whole damn set was amazing and I feel honored to have been part of that.

Tonight: Unsane @ Union Pool; Ballzy & Liquor Store @ Don Pedros; Trash 8 Year Anniversary; Raccoon Fighter @ Legion
Here's how it's going to go tonight. First I'm hitting Union Pool to see fucking UNSANE. I love this band, so excited. Then I'm going to Legion where my bud Wei (FullTimeFun) is throwing a party and my bros Raccoon Fighter are playing. If I can still function after that I head to The Studio for the Trash anniversary - it's the party that got me interested in NYC nightlife. Now if I can't get into the Unsane show (sold out I here) then I'm going to Don Pedros for Cerebral Ballzy & Liquor Store - awesome show.

Boogie Boarder & Forest City Played Union Pool
Saturday night, after an epic 20-mile bike ride, I headed over to Union Pool to check out my buddy Jamen's new band. They're called Forest City and it was their first show. One of the dudes in the band is also in Boogie Boarder. Did I mention they also played? Well they did.
Forest City was pretty awesome. They play a mix of rock and country and are a lot of fun. Once they play a few shows and tighten up their sound a bit they're going to be awesome. All of the components are there already. And frankly any band with Jamen on drums has a pretty good chance because he's the best damn drummer in Brooklyn, and you can quote me on that.
After Forest City's debut an older ska band came on. Yes, a ska band at Union Pool. Turns out one of the dudes in the ska band is the brother of one of the Boogie Boarders. I should mention now that I hate white-boy ska. Of all the genres of music it's the only one where I don't like a single band (except Pilfers, but their singer is Jamaican). So it pains me a bit to say this but they were good, really good. They were playing tons of instruments and beat boxing and other weird shit. They were clearly well practiced and experienced musicians which is rare these days. I don't know what they were called but they were good.
The only issue with the ska band was they played for a very long time. The reason why was that Boogie Boarder was short a member. Will was playing at Bruar Falls with Tony Castles. Everyone hung out for awhile and then Will came barging through Union Pool with guitar in hand and made straight for the stage.
This was my first Boogie Boarder show, which is kinda crazy all considered. I heard they're one of the best live bands in BK and based on the four or so songs I heard they're certainly up there. Unfortunately because they started so late I had to leave halfway through the set. But what I saw I liked, a lot! And Cyrus is a fucking beast on drums. Between the deranged look on his face and the extreme violence he hits his kit with you would think that a drum set murdered his puppy when he was a kid or something.
I'm sorry I had to bail early but I had fun while I was there. Oh and the Union Pool taco truck needs to get their shit together. The tacos have sucked lately and they're smaller. WTF?

Tonight: I'm Hosting The Last Rated-X Ever; Wild Yaks @ Union Pool
I start the night at Union Pool for a Wild Yaks show. They're headlining so go and show some support for our favorite Brooklyn band. After that we jump on the L and head over to Don Hill's for the last Rated-X/Panty Party ever. Somehow I ended up as one of the hosts, which is pretty cool. So there it is, Saturday is good - fuck the rain.

The Annuals Playing SoundFix & Union Pool On Thursday
The Annuals are playing two shows in Brooklyn on Thursday. The first is a free show at Soundfix which starts around 6PM. Then they head towards the Lorimer stop and play a set at Union Pool with Hymms. This show starts at 8PM and costs $13, which seems kinda steep considering you can see them for free the same day.

Tonight: Rated-X Anniversary & I Like Food
Technically the food thing is today, about 30 minutes from now in fact. It's a book release party about food that bands eat on the road and, of course, there will be food - it's free by the way. After that I am coming home and taking a nap but that doesn't concern you. After I awaken from my slumber I'm getting all gussied up and heading over to Rated-X at Luke & Leroy. It's not just a normal Rated-X, it's the anniversary party. I'd go over the details but it's much easier to just post the flyer.
