Corrosion Of Conformity Played Brooklyn Bowl

On Wednesday the great COC played Brooklyn Bowl. But this ain't your Southern metal COC from the 90's. Nope. This is the version of COC that fused metal, punk and hardcore back in the late 90's. When I was a teenager I thought Mike Dean had some of the sickest bass lines I'd ever heard within the realm of heavy music.

By the time I was old enough to go to shows though Pepper Keenan had come into the fold and COC turned into the MTV friendly Southern metal that made them famous. I love most of what they did with Pepper but the early stuff was special and I never thought I'd get to see it live. To say I was excited for the show would be an understatement.

As we walked in COC was just getting started. We headed towards the front; pushing our way through a sea of fat, old and ugly bastards. Now a COC show in general won't exactly get the pretty people to show up but the fact that Clutch was headlining made for an exceptionally gnarly cluster of apes. Fucking Clutch, man. What a shitty band. Nascar metal for retards...but I digress. COC is why I was there, the only reason I was there.

We got right up front with ease and there they were Woody Weatherman, Reed Mullin and Mike fucking Dean! Mike Dean, as I mentioned, was a bit of a role model for me when I was learning to play bass. It was all very awesome.

They played some of my favorites like "Holier", which was amazing to hear live. They were all smiles and laughing as they messed up a couple tunes. They were having a great time and so were all of the fans down on the floor. They even started to play some Deliverance era tunes to whip the crowd into a frenzy and then switch it up to an old jam right before the verse. Good fun.

Tonight: Corrosion Of Conformity @ Brooklyn Bowl

The original COC lineup will be at Brooklyn Bowl tonight. As some of you may know before Pepper showed up COC was a bad ass, hardcore punk band. Well, not exactly hardcore or punk but something like that. They were fucking awesome. The headliner is Clutch. Of all the overrated bands in the world I think Clutch might be my number one head scratcher. Why do people like this damn band? Anyway, COC goes on at 9pm.

Tonight: MIA @ Brooklyn Bowl (Free Show)

Last week I let you know about the totally free M.I.A. show that was going down at Brooklyn Bowl. Well, tonight is the big night. It's going to be a shitshow to end all shitshows so be prepared. They're not letting people line-up until 7pm and the doors open at 9:30pm. Frankly I think you're all nuts if you stand in line for 2 hours but hey, that's just me.

M.I.A. Playing Free Show At Brooklyn Bowl

Today M.I.A. announced on Twitter that she'll be playing a free show at Brooklyn Bowl on October 6th. It seems that it's a straight up "first come, first serve" kinda deal, so get there really early if you wanna get in.

Tonight: Ra Ra Riot & Motel Motel Release Parties With Vampire Weekend, Chairlift & Violens!

Tonight we've got two awesome bands, Ra Ra Riot and Motel Motel, throwing record release parties in Brooklyn. Ra Ra Riot will be DJing alongside their buddies Vampire Weekend at Brooklyn Bowl, which is free and has some kind of Cabo Wabo tequila deal. Motel Motel is having their party over at Union Pool with DJ sets from Chairlift and Violens. That one costs $8, which is kind of a bummer.

Beach Fossils Played Brooklyn Bowl 5/13

Kate checked out one of The Deli mag shows at Brooklyn Bowl last week...
------------------------
Thursday night I checked out deli fest at brooklyn bowl. Deli magazine was founded by Paolo Degregorio 5 years ago and focuses on local nyc bands. You can also find issues in various cities such as LA, Nashville, Chicago, SF, New England, Portland, Philly and Austin.

I arrived at brooklyn bowl just as Mon Khmer played their final two songs. The last song kind of reminded me of an Alberta Cross song "Taking Control." I was super bummed that I missed these guys.

Midnight Masses was up next. I was expecting a little more from them overall. There was a lot going on at once up there so I wasn't sure where to direct my attention. There was some chick playing the tambourine with a guitar strapped to her back, I felt it was a little unnecessary. The lead singer was banging the hell out of a drum, I don't know, it was just a little too much. I guess their sound wasn't very cohesive. But, they had really good voices. I feel like maybe if they ditched some instruments their voices wouldn't be over-powered by sound.

Beach Fossils played last. These guys were so good. I feel like a lot of the bands that I've seen lately have had a 60s surf sound to them. They reminded me a little of The Drums. These kids had everyone dancing (Yeah I danced a little at brooklyn bowl, get over it). These guys rocked and I can't wait to hear more from them. Oh yeah, immediately following their performance was ?uestlove DJ'ing, double score!

Tonight: Gogol Bordello @ Brooklyn Bowl

I totally slacked and didn't get tix in time for this one. If the insane Monotonix show at Brooklyn Bowl was any indicator of what's in store then I'm very jealous of any of you going tonight. Gogol is one of my favorite live bands and Brooklyn Bowl is turning out to be one of my favorite venues.

Tonight: MONOTONIX @ Brooklyn Bowl!

One of the best live bands I've ever seen (out of several thousand bands) is playing Brooklyn Bowl tonight. Monotonix are simply mind blowing live. They alone are worth the price of admission but you also get the Legendary Shack Shakers, Old Time Relijun and Skeletonbreath (O'Death side project). Every band playing tonight is awesome so I say cancel any plans you had and go to this because it will be one of the best shows you'll ever attend, I promise.

Black Lips Playing Brooklyn Bowl

Black Lips just announced some new tour dates and it looks like they'll be in stopping by Brooklyn Bowl on March 23rd. Tickets are kinda expensive ($17) but I'm sure they'll be playing some $5 yet-to-be-announced Todd P show or something too.

Wavves Playing Free L Magazine Party @ Brooklyn Bowl

The L Magazine is celebrating Fat Tuesday with an indie rock show. Kinda weird right? Oh well, it's free and since SoCo is a sponsor I'm guessing their will be some kind of free drinks. To start the festivities there will be a parade complete with floats, costumes, and beads (show your tits!). It all starts at McCarren Park and then ends up at Brooklyn Bowl. You gotta RSVP to get in.

It'll be just like this, only colder and more hipstery.

O'Death Playing Free Show @ Brooklyn Bowl Tomorrow

My friend Jen over at The Music Slut is having her birthday party at Brooklyn Bowl tomorrow and O'Death is playing! Last night I was actually hanging with the O'Death dudes at the Kemado holiday party. They mentioned that they might play but even late last night seemed unsure if they'd have the whole band or not. Well I guess it all worked out because Jen just put the word out that O'Death would in fact be playing.

They go on pretty early, like 6PM, so get there early. With all the side projects the band has going on it might be awhile before they play again so don't miss it. And get Jen something nice for her birthday.

Tonight: Bottle Up & Go @ Brooklyn Bowl (FREE); The World Series

Our buds in Bottle Up & Go are playing a free show at Brooklyn Bowl tonight. In the world of sports we've got Game 1 of the World Series. Normally I don't give a shit about baseball (at least not since McGwire/Sosa/Bonds ruined it) but I'm from Philly and I live in NYC so Phillies vs. Yankees is a pretty big deal. Despite not being interested in baseball in years I will always hate the fucking Yankees (unless I go back in time when Babe Ruth & Gehrig were on the team) so go Phils!

Brooklyn Bowl Opening July 7th!

A few months back I got the grand tour of this place and despite the fact that it was under pretty heavy construction it was clear that Brooklyn Bowl is fucking rad! I mean, how can you go wrong with a bowling alley, gourmet restaurant, bar, and music venue in one big ass building? Plus it's all eco-friendly and has some crazy state of the art sound system. This is going to be the place to be once the doors open.
