Lou Reed + Metallica Track Leaked...It Sucks

The first full track from the Metallica and Lou Reed collaboration has hit the net and boy does it suck. It's everything wrong about Metallica (the 90's) mixed with all that is wrong about Lou Reed (artsy bullshit) mashed together. It sucks to a level that nothing has sucked before, not even St. Anger. It makes me want to exterminate man kind. I woke up kinda drunk and feeling good and now I want to kill myself. I want someone to drop an anvil from the 20th floor and have it land on my head, obliterating my eardrums. Then, and only then, I will at last be at peace.

Joel Jerome of the band Dios has a thing for old Beck tunes. I happen to be a big fan of the old, weird, semi-acoustic, white trash anthem days of Beck. Frankly, I'm bored with artsy, electro Beck and yearn for the days of "Loser" and "Beercan". Anyway, Joel Jerome has recorded an album of nothing but old Beck tunes called, When Beck Was Cool which hits iTunes on April 19th.

Just got an email about some band from Portland called AgesandAges. While their name needs a little work the songs are pretty damn good. They're kinda folky but not in the annoying hippie way. Give them a listen (the songs in MP3 format are better than the tune in the video) and if you want to see them live they're in town on the 29th and 30th at the Knitting Factory and Mercury Lounge.

Bare Wires Video & MP3, "Don't Ever Change" + Playing NYC April 7th & 10th

I just gave Bare Wires a first spin and I have to say I'm digging their sound. At different times you can hear Stooges and NY Dolls influences mixed with some Beach Boys. The only bad thing I can say about this band is the singer has the creepiest mustache I've ever seen but I guess that's a good thing these days.

There's a new Strokes song and they're giving it away for free on their website. Well, you have to give them your email and phone number so I guess it's not totally free but you don't have to fork over any money at least. Am I the only one that thinks they sped up the vocal tracks? His voice isn't usually that high. I think there's a chipmunk thing going on here.

Brooklyn Ski Club 5-Year

Tomorrow night Brooklyn Ski Club is celebrating 5 long and grueling years or party hopping, heavy drinking, bands, shitshows, dance parties, nudity and general debauchery. It's been rough but we've survived.

We've asked some of our favorite bands to come to Don Pedro's tomorrow night and celebrate with us. For a measly $6 you get to see The Beets, Wild Yaks, Gunfight!, Spirit Family Reunion and Raccoon Fighter. If someone else put that show together I would happily pay $10+ to see it and when you factor in the $1-$2 beers, well it's a steal! It will be sweaty and boozey and the next day you'll tell your friends who stayed home that they're huge assholes for missing it.

Lady Bree will be bartending, Impose Magazine will be photographing, Tom from Radio America will be DJing and I will be drunk...we all will be drunk.

Ritz Riot! "Black Ink" (Free MP3)

I randomly stumbled upon Ritz Riot! a couple days ago and have listened to this track about 6 times since. The song is called "Black Ink" and was released back in July. It's a little Matt & Kim and a little Team Robespierre, maybe some Death Set too. I guess you could call it electro-punk if you want but I just say it sounds like Brooklyn.

The bands only seems to have a few properly recorded tracks (here's another) and based on the live videos seem to ditch the keyboards when they play live. I haven't seen them yet though so maybe I'll check them out at Lit on December 2nd and report back. I hope they have the keyboards.

MiniBoone Are Awesome, Huh?

Sometimes I get so overwhelmed by the bombardment of bands that a really fucking good one slips right through the cracks on me. I've been hearing about MiniBoone since October or so but just never got around to checking them out. A couple weeks ago I was finally able to give them a proper listen and holy shit, they're awesome!

I'm a sucker for a band that plays uptempo, fun music and MiniBoone seems to specialize in it. There's an obvious Talking Heads influence but way less arty and way more party.

Last week I let you know about the totally free M.I.A. show that was going down at Brooklyn Bowl. Well, tonight is the big night. It's going to be a shitshow to end all shitshows so be prepared. They're not letting people line-up until 7pm and the doors open at 9:30pm. Frankly I think you're all nuts if you stand in line for 2 hours but hey, that's just me.

Tonight: Last Forest City Show Ever!

Forest City is a Brooklyn country band with one of the dudes from Boogie Boarder and my buddy Jamen from Regal Degal. If you're lucky you might have caught one of their raucous live shows. The band doesn't play very often and after tonight they'll never play again. Well, maybe they'll play once a year in South Jersey but that's up in the air. This band has been one of my favorites for the past year or so and I highly recommend you see them while you still can, which means go see them tonight or never.
