Snot Back, Lynn Rolling Over

During the 90's shit fest of nu-metal and alterna-rock there was one band that somehow remained punk. Sure they hung out with Korn and Limp Bizkit but so did everyone else back then. The truth is the only bands out of that lot that I'm not ashamed to say I was into is the Deftones and Snot. Deftones turned out to be the lone great band from the bunch.

If any other band had a chance of surviving it was Snot. Snot were the punk rockers of the lot. Everyone else had roots in metal, hardcore, and rap but Snot rep'd the punks. Sure it was nu-metal but it wasn't the same as the rest.

Lynn Strait, singer of Snot, quickly gained a reputation as being one of the nicest people in the biz. Everyone loved this guy, even Sharon Osbourne. He was one of those totally irreplaceable frontmen. So, of course, like any beloved person he died well before his time. I believe it was 1999, or so, in a car wreck. The metal and punk community got together and released a tribute album to him. I mean, how many people get tribute albums?

It saddens me to say that Lynn, the irreplaceable, has been replaced. Not only has Snot reunited with a new singer but the guy is a fucking goon. The guy sucks! And it proves one thing that everyone already knew - Snot wasn't shit without Lynn. There's a video of their first show and without Lynn even the old songs just sound like some average tough guy hardcore band. It's fucking shameful.

Punk Week On Craig Ferguson w/ X, NY Dolls, & The Damned

Despite having one of the lowest rated late night shows ever apparently Craig Ferguson has decent taste in music. This week tune in to the show and catch X, New York Dolls, and The Damned! That's pretty exciting shit - too bad you have to sit through that terrible show for one song. Actually, he's not that bad I guess - seems like a nice enough guy. It's not easy going head to head with Conesy.

Tues Oct. 28th : X
Wed Oct. 29th : New York Dolls
Thurs Oct. 3oth : The Damned
Friday Oct. 31st : The Damned

Like last year I looked at this lineup and said "who are these bands" and hopefully like last year I leave with my mind blown by some random band. Last year's random band was a little know BK group called Yeasayer!

BSC Parties: Need Bands & DJs

I've decided to start producing events in Brooklyn, and maybe on occasion in the city but probably not. Anyway, I've put together a little team of people to make shit happen. Now all I need is bands and DJs. Sure I know plenty of both and I'll be talking to them but I'd also like to get some people I haven't been in contact with involved. If you're interested email me with the SUBJECT LINE: Booking. And include a link to your MySpace page. Also tell me about some shows you've played.

Tonight: Eastern Sweats, The Sexes, Haircut @ Don Pedro's

E Town Concrete Reunion Show - Tix On Sale

I know a lot of people hate this band and that's fine with me. I grew up in Jersey and there was no band that better represented growing up in Jersey in the 90's then ETC. They looked like the people I hung out with and they sounded like the people I hung out with.

Their songs were about drug dealers and thieves and trying to make it to the top when everyone said you couldn't. That's exactly what I dealt with back then and those songs spoke to me and inspired me. We liked ETC because we were ETC, and some of those guys still are. I've since moved on, I don't hang out with thugs in the bad part of town anymore - I'm too old and soft for that shit these days. Nonetheless I'm excited to see E. Town again, I think this will make show number 15 or 16 for me. Too bad its at Starland - $10 beers and in the middle of nowhere.

BandToBand.com = My Favorite Site

I was recently introduced to an awesome website called BandToBand.com. It basically creates a family tree connecting bands via members. It's kinda crazy seeing some of these connections. For example The Bee Gees are only 8 bands removed from Slayer. Which means someone in Slayer played someone, who played with someone (and so on) that was in the Bee Gees. How fucking awesome is that? Nile is only 9 bands removed from Muddy Waters. Buddy Holly is only 9 removed from Integrity!

Shit is crazy... and fun! It also shows you the linking band member and the album they shared. It's cool because there's all types of random ass bands that had some pretty major dudes in them that I never heard of until this site. So yeah, it's also great if you want to know what weird ass side project shit Jello Biafra or Dwid has going on.

TK Webb And The Visions: MP3s & Shows

So I've heard the name TK Webb a million times and have def heard some songs in passing. However, I never really sat down and gave the songs a proper listen - until this morning. I'm digging it so I thought I'd share some info and music that was just passed along to me.

TK Webb and The Visions
October 18 – Webster Hall (w/ Secret Machines)
October 24 – Music Hall of Williamsburg (Kemado CMJ Showcase w/ Dungen, Marissa Nadler, Headdress, Muslims, Children, Cheeseburger)

MP3's:
Teen Is Still Shaking - TK Webb
Closed Caption Slang - TK Webb

Pigeon Detectives "Say It Like You Mean It" Video

A few years ago, I'd say 2004, my brothers band (Cutie & The Catfish) was playing a show at The Continental. It was one of their first gigs in NYC and there weren't many people there. Amongst the few were a group of English guys who seemed really into the show. Afterwards they came up to us and began to tell us how great they thought the show was and that the Catfish should come over and play England.

You see, these English blokes were in a little known band called The Pigeon Detectives and they could help out with gigs across the pond. After a night of heavy drinking with our new British pals we exchanged contact info. The plan was to take them up on their offer but unfortunately being poor doesn't make overseas travel very easy. We stayed in touch for a few months but it never worked out.

Since then The Pigeon Detectives have blown up! They're a pretty big deal in the UK and are getting big here in the states as well. They're a nice bunch of guys so I'm happy to see them succeeding. Of course I'm a little pissed my brothers band didn't make the voyage and possibly share in the success. But the point is these guys are class acts and really fucking good at the music thing. Check out their new video - it's jolly good!
