I don't listen to much post-1992 hardcore anymore but I used to be way into it. VOD was one of the first hardcore bands I ever heard. I was a metal head and they signed to Roadrunner Records, along with Madball. I got some comp that had both bands on it and it blew my mind. From that day forward I dove head first into hardcore, from the roots to the metal infused 90's stuff. Hardcore was my life for quite a few years.

It's nice to see VOD back in action but frankly this is a little too metal. Granted, they always leaned pretty far into metal territory but it would have been cool to hear a return to early 90's style shit. So many metal bands are using HxC breakdowns and riffs that it would have been rad to hear some straight hardcore. Anyway, it's still good and has some interesting things going on.

Suicidal Tendencies Played House Of Vans

For the past few weeks people were talking about a secret Suicidal Tendencies show going down in Brooklyn. Everyone knew it would be on September 15th because that was the only open date on the tour but the location was under wraps. But when your tour is sponsored by Vans and it just so happens Vans has a pop-up venue in Brooklyn it wasn't a hard one to figure out.

I had a few friends that know people at Vans and/or with the band, I'm not really sure. All I know is we asked around and it seemed like we would be able to get in. Then MyFreeConcert posted the RSVP info so to be safe I RSVPd. I never got a confirmation and our friends who might be able to get us in were running late so we just went over there, not at all sure we'd get in.

The first band I ever saw, way back in 1994, was Suicidal Tendencies and I haven't seen them since. I had to get into this show.

To our surprise there were hardly any people there. People in line were chatting about the RSVP thing and it seemed like only about 1 of 5 people actually got a confirmation. The majority of the line were just there, hoping to get in.

Right at 8pm they opened the doors and people started trickling in. It turns out the RSVP email on MyFreeConcert actually worked. 15 minutes after the doors opened we were inside getting frisked. Apparently they don't usually frisk people at House Of Vans but this is an ST show.

After getting through the checkpoint we headed right through the warehouse/skate park and through the giant garage door into the yard. Outside they had a bar area and free food from that Korean taco truck and Meatball Shop. Unfortunately we just stuffed our guts at Fette Sau so instead we headed straight for the booze. They had tall boys of Brooklyn Lager up for grabs (yeah, that means free).

We hung out in the back drinking until the show was about to start. As we were waiting we saw the Cerebral Ballzy boys, The Death Set and other familiar faces. All the punks were out!

When the band started to setup everyone headed inside and the outdoor bar shut down. People were drunk and pumped and ready to get crazy. As soon as ST struck the first chord all hell broke loose. I think they started with "You Can't Bring Me Down" which was fucking amazing. Almost too good to waste in the beginning of the set.

They went on to play all of the songs you'd want to hear. The pit was huge and crazy but not very violent. Just a bunch of kids having fun and even skating through the moshers. At one point there was this long hair, bearded Viking looking dude kicking ass in $200 jeans. Then it hit me, Chad fucking Muska! My favorite skater when I was growing up. I've been to a bunch of parties with celebs lately and this was the very first time I was starstruck. Chad Muska was thrashing like a champ in the pit. Fuck yes!

There were some lulls in the set most likely due to Cyko Miko's semi-incoherent rants between songs. The vocals were super low the whole set and no one could understand a thing he was saying but that didn't stop him from talking. It also didn't stop him from dancing which was awesome. He was doing his modified Beavis dance all over the stage.

For the encore the band invited the crowd up on stage with them for "Pledge Your Allegiance". The kids on the floor immediately bum rushed the stage. My shitty knee prevented me from joining them. Some chubby goon went to hop the barrier and hooked his foot - 250 lb face plant, ouch! Within seconds the band was playing and there was an all out mosh pit on stage. Then out of nowhere someone is crowd surfing on stage. It was Crazy Abe from Cerebral Ballzy!

To recap - free booze, free food, rad kids and Suicidal Tendencies! How can that not be fucking awesome?

Deftones never cease to amaze me. They emerged from a scene that many consider the low point of the last 20 years to be one of the great bands of our generation. Somehow they continue to maintain relevancy when all of their contemporaries have become the punchlines of tired old jokes. But their evolution isn't what this post is about - they have another new video to share and it's chock full of live footage.

Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth & Anthrax Playing Yankee Stadium!

When the Big 4 announced they were playing together everyone assumed there would be a North American tour. When they finally announced the dates it was just one fucking show and in California. Needless to say people were pretty pissed off about the whole thing. Well, they just added another date and it's in NYC at Yankee Stadium! This is going to be amazing. My gut tells me tix are going to start at about $75 but given the circumstances it's probably worth it. The tickets go on sale at 10AM on May 6th. The show itself goes down on September 14th.

After that Dave from The Party Death, Prince Terrence and Kelle Calco handle the tunes for the rest of the night. As always, no cover and $2 beer until midnight! Previously Unreleased Pantera Track Surfaces "The Will To Survive"

Pantera is working on some deluxe edition albums and has apparently dug up a bunch of old unreleased tracks. "The Will To Survive" comes from the Cowboys From Hell sessions and it's fucking awesome! You can stream it on Facebook (link below).

It's obvious why they cut it though. Pantera was in the middle of a makeover during the CFH days. They wanted to ditch their roots as a high pitch, glam metal band (yes, they were totally glam at one point) and establish themselves amongst the whiskey drinking, tattoo'd maniac bands like Slayer. They succeeded a thousandfold at this, mostly by ditching tunes like "The Will To Survive". But that doesn't mean the songs weren't totally bad ass. In fact this track has the heaviness of a CFH track but with the vocal style of their earlier stuff, which overall gives it an almost Iron Maiden / Judas Priest type of feel.

Pay close attention and you'll even hear the riff from "This Love" in there!

Danzig - Deth Red Sabaoth (Full Album Stream)

The brand new Danzig album, Deth Red Sabaoth, is streaming on AOL. I took a listen and the first few songs are kinda, well, old sounding. I'm not saying it sounds like old Danzig, I'm saying it sounds like Oldman Danzig. His voice just isn't there in the early tracks. Plus, track three sounds an awful lot like Marilyn Manson's version of "Sweet Dreams" (Seriously, try singing the lyrics over it, fits perfect).

Luckily that all disappears on track four, "Black Candy," which is pretty good, especially the vocals. From there on it's pretty much what you expect from Danzig. The tunes are killer all the way to the end. My only complaint is the excessive use of guitar squeals on every song, courtesy of Prong's Tommy Victor. Otherwise I'm digging the album, it's got the classic blues tinged metal made famous by Glenn. There's nothing here that's going to blow you're mind but that may be a good thing. Sometimes it's nice when a band/musician sticks to their guns.

Amon Amarth & Holy Grail Played Irving Plaza 4/25

Last night we headed over to Irving Plaza to check out Viking metal legends Amon Amarth, Celtic metal Swiss band Eluveitie and LA-based NWOHM revivalists Holy Grail. Believe it or not the show actually seems to have started on time, which means we missed a couple songs from Holy Grail. Given my new party, Smell The Glove, is all about hair metal and NWOHM tongue-in-cheek goodness I was pretty excited to see these guys.

We walked in mid-song, I wish I could tell you what song but I haven't heard much from these guys. What we did hear was pretty fantastic in that campy metal kind of way. I like a band that knows how to have a good time and doesn't take themselves too seriously and that can certainly be said for these guys. It seems like an odd pairing with the other two bands but considering there aren't many contemporaries out there right now I guess you have to start somewhere. The set was awesome but I'd love to see them play a dingy little LES joint.

Up next was Eluveitie who play a weird Celtic metal complete with lutes, fifes, mandolin and all types of other traditional instruments. Considering I've never even heard of these guys it took a little getting used to. After a few songs I started getting into it, at least at points. Some of it was a little too out there for me but when they nailed it I was pretty impressed. Being Scottish/Welsh/Irish I'm way into Celtic music and some of the songs really incorporated it well with the heavy stuff and at other times...not so much. The closing tune was especially awesome, whatever it was.

Finally the kings of Viking metal were up. Around this time I look over to the right side of the balcony and saw Howard Stern writer and former Death/Iced Earth drummer, Richard Christy. As soon as Amon Amarth got started Richard was air drumming and head-banging like a mad man. It was pretty awesome!

Amon themselves are fucking amazing and kinda funny too. I wasn't expecting humor from a Scandinavian death metal band but the singer was saying some pretty funny shit and was way entertaining between songs. The first few tunes were a bit too "metal by the books" for my taste but the precision was impressive. Then they started into some of their more recognizable tunes about Odin, Valhalla and the whole raping and pillaging shit.

They ended with some awesome violin outro and all the heavy stuff dropped out. Then the lights dimmed and the band stepped back into the shadows. The violin continued to play and build momentum. Then all of a sudden the band emerged from the shadows and blasted into some insane heavy stuff all in one smooth motion. It was beyond impressive, something like that takes years of playing together to nail so perfectly.

After that song the band left the stage and the crowd went crazy, demanding an encore. Amon Amarth came out and played another 2 or 3 killer songs and then took their bows and departed, off to rape and pillage the next town.

Smell The Glove Was Rad, Dude

The first ever Smell The Glove went down on Tuesday night at LES rock bar St. Jerome's. The shindig started off with the NoiseCreep.com listening party for the new Scorpions album Sting In The Tail. By 9:45 the place was already pretty full and everyone seemed to be rocking out to the new Scorps.

The first DJ was our bro Matt aka Klicka from Wizardry. He went on around 10PM and got the night started right with some killer hair metal, hard rock, and some gritty punk tunes. Also around this time the lovely go-go girls Amber Star and Apathy started doing their thing. As advertised we had Scotty Skitzo cutting free Mohawks and the first victim stepped up around 10:30. Unfortunately, our buddy Lex was the only one with enough balls (and booze) to go under the knife.

The next DJ up was iLan, who happened to be celebrating his birthday. He broke out some rare and rowdy 80's hard rock. St. Jerome's sounded (and kinda looked) like the Sunset Strip in 1986. The night ended with Cobra (Sean Carpenter) who got a little heavier with some Sabbath and Maiden.

Brooklyn Ski Club Party: SMELL THE GLOVE (March 9th)

About a month ago I was waiting for some pals in the LES so I stopped into Welcome To The Johnsons for a brew. As I was sitting on the wood-arm chair by the door sipping my PBR I had an idea. How awesome would it be to have a party at Johnson's? Really fun. The problem is it's just not set up for it. So I thought about other joints and the first one to pop into my head was St. Jerome's. Did I mention Motley Crue was on at the time?

So I shot my homeboy Carlos a text about having a super fun metal party. Not like Lamb Of God & Pantera stuff - I found out in high school that shit scares off broads - but instead fun metal, like Crue, Poison, Motorhead, KISS and maybe throw in some punk and glam, like Sex Pistols, Dead Boys, NY Dolls, etc. We were onto something but it needed more.

So we called up some girls to gogo and looked for someone to give people free Mohawks. Then we called up some friends in killer local bands about guest DJing. We contacted Universal Music and NoiseCreep.com about having the official NYC listening party for the new Scorpions album, Sting In The Tail. We also spoke to some awesome local shops about partnering up on the whole thing.

Somehow ALL of this came together and the end result was SMELL THE GLOVE! We have high hopes for this party. It's my first without bands playing so I'm nervous but the early feedback is better then anything I've experienced before. This party is going to rule hard. Come out, get drunk, and rock out to some fist pumping tunage.
