Challenge of the Future "You Can't Call Off the Dog"

Nick Zinner got his old college band back together and they're releasing an album they recorded at Adrian Grenier's studio, Wreckroom. The track is called "You Can't Call Off the Dogs" and it's just the type of weird I enjoy. It's fast with crazed vocals and I would take this over Yeah Yeah Yeahs any day of the week. I can't wait to hear the rest of the tracks. And who is the vocalist? This dude is fucking amazing. He sounds like a cross between Jack White, Jello Biafra and the Mad Hatter.

NGHBRS "Hold Up Girl"

When this track started out it seemed a little too clean and peppy for my taste but I hung in there. Turns out it's a pretty damn good song. "Hold Up Girl" is on NGHBRS upcoming album called Twenty One Rooms which comes out on July 16th.

CSS Has A New Album + Playing NYC July

I don't consider myself a CSS fan but they're one of those bands that are undeniably fun. If you're at a party and CSS comes on you're in good shape. They released a new album today called Planta with all sorts of guests on it and it was produced by Dave Sitek (TV on the Radio).

They're playing Bowery Ballroom on July 8th and Brooklyn Bowl on July 9th.

I'm going to be honest here and tell you that I'm pretty damn bored with Brooklyn music these days. The bands that have been around forever are still killing it but there aren't too many new bands that get my attention. That said, Heliotropes are fucking awesome. They finally have an album and it's available to stream on Spin. I've listened to about half of it so far and I dig it. The mellow tunes kinda remind me of Hole but that's not why I'm writing about them, check out the heavier stuff because it's really amazing. I like everything about this band and I haven't even seen them live yet. I never say good things about bands I haven't seen live. I hear good things though. Anyway, give this a listen and try and tell me it's not killer.

I used to love seeing this band but I haven't heard much from them lately. Well, they're back and working with Adult Swim! They have a new album coming out on May 3rd called Another Big Night Down The Drain. Art Decade Is Ben Talmi's New Band And They're Totally Awesome (Free Download)

Ben Talmi has a new band called Art Decade and they just sent me some music. The music has moments where it's pretty heavy, bordering on metal, then all of a sudden it goes into MGMT territory and then some late 90's AFI type shit. That description would imply a clusterfuck but it works amazingly. I'm particularly impressed with the track "Weapon". The band will be in NYC on April 20th at Lit and there's no way I'm missing it. In the meantime you can fill out the form on their website and get a free MP3.

City & Colour Release New Track, "Fragile Bird"

Alexisonfire (I'm wearing an AOF shirt right now, creepy) frontman, Dallas Green, has a new tune out. There is way more going on here than your typical C&C track. I'm not completely against the new sound but what is going on with the vocals? Dallas has the best voice in the game and your covering it with effects, fuck that shit Alex Newport. Get your head out of your ass, dude. Again, good song but I hate the production and especially when it comes to the vocals. The new album comes out on June 7th, it's called Little Hell.

Country Mice (when did they drop the "We Are"?) have a new track and it's pretty damn good. It's bit more uptempo then what I've come to expext from them and that's just fine by me. Their debut album, Twister, comes out on June 7th.

So...The New Strokes Album Is Out (Full Album Stream)

Yesterday the new, and much anticipated, album from The Strokes hit the shelves. They have it streaming in it's entirety on their website. I gave it a once over earlier today and I have to say, half of it is pretty good! The other half is weird 80's shit with high pitch vocals and fake drums. I'm sure it will grow on me but right now I'm not completely sold on whatever it is they're trying to pull on Angles. Anyway, give it a listen and if you have something to add leave a comment.

The Dirtbombs Covering Detroit Techno



I don't know shit about Detroit techno but The Dirtbombs cover techno tracks in general is pretty interesting. A whole album of this stuff comes out in February, more below.

Nearly ten years after their acclaimed Ultraglide in Black helped kick-start a renewed interest in all things Detroit and rock-and-roll, The Dirtbombs are releasing the de facto companion piece, Party Store.

Ultraglide was a covers collection of 60's and 70's soul gems centred on the ideas of African-American identity and politics of the era (see Curtis Mayfield's "Kung Fu" and Stevie Wonder's "Living for the City"). All of the songs made an impression on a young, pre-musical Mick Collins as he listened to them on 45's in the family basement.

Party Store is an assortment of live band interpretations of classic Detroit techno music of the 80's and early 90's. These are songs Collins digested when they were originally released - at a time where he was already making waves with garage-punk legends The Gories. Songs that run the gamut of subject matter from materialistic future-disco braggadocio "Sharevari" (originally by A Number of Names) to cold, post-industrial isolation of "Alleys of Your Mind" originally by Cybotron) through the instrumental optimism of a worldwide house classic, "Strings of Life" (originally by Derrick May)... ALL these themes encapsulate the climate of Detroit both now and at the time of their initial release. Let it be said clearly...this is a record that addresses, at the same time, both the past and the future of Detroit.

Radical Outing Presents: Never Forget (Four Loko Tribute Album)

Brooklyn's own Radical Outing have put together some tracks to commemorate the fallen, in this case Four Loko. The booze that has been fueling the DIY party scene for the past year has been banned and the company that makes it is removing the caffeine.

When I heard these tracks were being worked on I thought it would be some bullshit that got slapped together and might be funny but wouldn't be very good music. Well, I have to say some of these tracks are killer. I've listened to "I Drink Four Lokos In The Rain" at least four times today and "Sippin" is just a killer little punk track. And the artwork is pretty classic.
