New Years Eve Festivities

Here are the parties you should be hitting tonight.

Manhattan:
This is where I'll be at kids. I'm avoiding the big crazy parties this year. If you want fun without spending a fortune then this is it.

If you want non stop action then Motherfucker is the clear choice.

Brooklyn:
If you don't want to leave Brooklyn I suggest you hit up the Crashin' In party.

Be Back Soon

Immediately after getting back from the holidays I had to move to Greenpoint. Why am I telling you this? Because I don't have a god damn internet connection until next Thursday. I'll try to get a few posts up but it's highly unlikely. I feel cut off from the world right now - that's kinda sad, isn't it?

Merry Fucking Christmas

Merry Christmas chumps! I was going to wait until Christmas to post this but then I realized no one is going to see this shit on Christmas, except for the Jews that is (Happy Hannukkah). So here is my favorite new CHristmas video, by the Sin Destroyers. I also wanted to post an MP3 of my favorite Christmas song by Fear but I couldn't find one so here's a live video instead.

Sin Destoyers - Gifts To The World

Fear - Fuck Christmas

Moving To Greenpoint

By the end of the month I'll be living in Greenpoint. As such I need to move my shit and there are some things I want to get rid of. Here they are and they're yours for the taking - if they're worth taking.
  1. Old school monitor - Samtron
  2. 3 CD racks with individual disc slots, each hold about 50-100 discs. I get new discs on a regular basis and its a pain in the ass to rearrange those things.
  3. Iron
Actually that's it, I thought there would be more but I guess not. Anyway, I'm in the east village near Tompkins Square so drop me a line if you want either and are in the hood.

Musebox Mistletoe Makeout

Last night I was sitting home trying to figure out what I wanted to do for the night. Then, right on time, Tom (Radio America and BSC writer) called me up and told me he was partying at Lit. The funny thing was I RSVPd earlier and was going to end up there eventually anyway so I made up my mind and went to Lit.

When I got there I went to the bar and grabbed a free Sparks or two. I went looking for Tom but didn't see him and then I saw some people going into a little room in the back. The room was the "band room" and that's where Tom was. I didn't even know there was a band room at Lit - you learn something new everyday.

So I went back there and hung out and drank. There was a fairly large tub of beer back there for the band. Howeever most of the people in the room were not in the band yet everyone was sucking down the freebies. So I joined in and grabbed a brew. By the time Aarktica came on I had a nice little buzz going.

They played very moody atmospheric music and were pretty good if that's you're thing. The funny thing is the singer was all tatted up and wearing a Danzig shirt. You don't see too many metal heads fronting bands like this - it was kinda refreshing. Then they covered a Misfits song and I really got into it. I can't even remember what song it was but it was the weirdest Misfits cover ever. At first it felt a bit blasphemous but it grew on me and by the end I was up front singing along.

After that it was back to the band room for more beer. For the rest of the night there were beer bottles handed to me as soon as I would finish. Needless to say I was totally shit faced by the end of the night. I completely missed Nous Non Plus, which sucks because I've been hearing good things about them.

I have no clue what time it was when we left but I was gone. This morning was pretty rough as well but I guess I should know that by now.

I Heart Brooklyn Girls

I saw this posted on Fleshbot (yeah, that's right) a couple of days ago and I've been meaning to post it. Some photographer put together a calendar of tasty Brooklyn girls, each representing a 'hood and an era. I'm particularly taken by Miss Park Slope. I think Miss Williamsburg looks more like a Miss Bushwick. And where's a tall blond Polish girl representing Greenpoint? Anyway it's a cool calendar so check out the girls of our borough.

Tickle Me Emo

Wow, Mad TV did something funny! I've actually seen "Tickle Me Emo" icons and shit like that before so I can't give them points for originality but still, it's good.

Fox Sports Loves Dischord!

Apparently somebody over at Fox Sports used to be a punk rocker. Check out this little blurb from a recent article.

It's no surprise that there's some unrest among the Redskins fans. They put all their eggs in the Joe Gibbs basket, and the faith was not rewarded. I'm sure Daniel Snyder will try to solve the problem by throwing money at more free agents; it's one of the NFL's most predictable rites of spring. Which overrated wide receiver will the Redskins embrace this year? I shudder to think. Look at the make-up of this team, and you'll realize that the Redskins will always be a minor threat unless they can build some depth. There's really only one word to describe this franchise right now: fugazi.
And the kicker is it's about the Washington Redskins, as in Washington DC. Is Aaron Shatz the pen name of Ian MacKaye?

***Update: A reader pointed out that fellow DC punk label Teenbeat has a few bands snuck in as well icluding Unrest & Eggs. If you spot anymore let me know.

Apes & Androids: Movable Hype Live Video

I was just checking out the latest on A&A when I noticed that Steamclam posted a video from the Movable Hype show back in November (which made my Top 10 Show List). It's been up for a while I just hadn't seen it until now. It's a cool video and has both backstage and stage shots, plus the audio is pretty good. Most of the video is the closer, "Hot Kathy."

Limelight / Avalon Will Be Mini-Mall

You probably already heard that Avalon (former Limelight) would be shutting down. But the latest bit of news is a bit sad - they're turning the joint into a fucking mini-mall! Now I was never a big fan of Avalon so I don't care that it's closing. I am however very anti mini-mall, they're fucking gross. I don't know what's more disturbing, a debaucherous night club in a church or a mini-mall in a church. Although both kinda fit when you think about it, greed and lust.

Band & Crew

Today I stumbled upon a site which lists jobs in the music biz. Well, actually if you're looking for a gig at a label this isn't going to help but if you want to go on the road then I think you should take a look. This site also lists spots in bands so if you want to join a band I also recommend it.

I checked some of the listings and at this point there isn't much. But that's why I wrote a post about it. It's a damn good idea but it needs some people to populate it. So go to the site and add some listings, unless it's a tour manager gig - in that case just hire me.

Black Lips "Not A Problem"

Ever since the infamous show at Mercury Lounge, which involved mouth pissing, I've been a fan of the Black Lips. Today in my inbox was an MP3 by the boys from Georgia called "Not A Problem". The song is pretty damn good and I'm in love with the production on this track.

When I first listened to it I didn't even realize it was live until the cheering at the end. The song/production really reminds me of the Swamp Rats alot, the world needs more bands that sound like this. Apparently it was recorded down in Tijuana and will be released on a live album called Los Valentes Del Mundo Nuevo.

Warner Music Buys Roadrunner Records

Today Warner Music announced that they have bought Roadrunner Records. I have no idea how this will effect metal music. Frankly Roadrunner has been going down hill since the late 90's anyway. Nonetheless they are still the top metal label out there. I just hope this doesn't mean more fucking bands like Nickelback.

Tonight: Shindig!

GO...

GWAR at Irving Plaza 12/14

I've never been a real fan of GWAR. I don't have any of their albums, I don't know the words to their songs, and I couldn't even tell you the name of a song besides "Saddam, A Go-Go". That said, I've been waiting to see GWAR live since I was in high school, when a friend of mine who only listened to hip hop and R&B went to a GWAR show. I don't remember why he went but I do know the next day he wouldn't shut the fuck up about how it was the coolest thing he ever saw...and he hated metal.

On Thursday night I finally had a chance, after all these years, to see the mighty GWAR! I got to the show pretty early because I wanted to see Municipal Waste and The Red Chord. Shortly after I went up stairs and drank a beer Municipal Waste came out.

To be honest I don't know much about this band. I've heard a few songs and I know they're supposed to be true old school thrash. Plus you can't walk around the LES or Brooklyn for more then 20 minutes without seeing someone wearing a MW shirt. So suffice to say I was interested in seeing what they were all about.

They came out, the singer on crutches, and instantly started talking about drinking. Then they started playing and it was certainly old school thrash - I'll give them that. But it wasn't very good old school thrash. The riffs were pretty dumbed down and vocals weren't so hot.

About halfway through I realized what should have been apparent right away - this shit isn't serious! Municipal Waste is the kind of band I would be in if I still had the time and the skills. These are a bunch of drunk fuckers who like to have fun and play metal. Not just metal but the most hammed up metal they can. Every song is about drinking and mythical beasts - and it's pretty awesome if taken with a grain of salt. Hell, they even send a chick out to give beer bongs to the crowd, now that's taking care of your fans.

After MW it was time for The Red Chord. Now unlike MW I have been a fan of The Red Chord for a while. They play a cross of death metal and hardcore and it's pretty awesome. When the band came onto the stage I was pretty surprised by their general appearance. Actually it was the singer's appearance that stood out. The rest of the band were grizzly ass headbangers. But the singer was a clean cut frat boy looking dude with an uncanny resemblance to Ben Affleck.

But metal isn't about appearances it's about noise and The Red Chord brought the noise. They were pretty fucking heavy and the crowd had obvious mixed opinions. For every person cheering there was another booing. One guy up front kept yelling out "GWAR!" and flipping off the band. That started a back and forth between the guy and the band, which was actually pretty damn funny.

During the last song the whole band jumped off the stage and climbed up onto the barrier. They finished off the set with their guitars right in the crowds faces. It was a pretty cool way to finish up an awesome set.

Once The Red Chord packed it up the crew started setting up the stage for GWAR. It took a while to get everything ready, all the while I was fighting people off for the spot I held up front. I was really excited when a band of alien monsters took the stage. Just before the first song their was a ritual beheading which gave the crowd their first taste of blood. As the headless creep ran around the stage spurting blood all over the crowd GWAR ripped through their first song.

I was extremely impressed by how good the songs were. I was under the impression that GWAR was all about gimmicks but the music is pretty fucking good too. But the gimmicks are why people come to the show and it's obvious why. Who else has the guest appearances like GWAR? George Bush, Osama bin Laden, Hitler, The Pope, and even Jewcifer (Jewish Satan) - all hacked to pieces by Oderus and the slaves.

When Hitler took the stage he was accompanied by Jesus - who disappeared once Hitler whipped it out and gave the crowd a 3-minute money shot. Being that I was right up front I was getting douched by an assortment of fluids including piss, blood, cum, and pus. At one point a stream of something nailed me right in the chest and stayed there for about 30 seconds. I was completely soaked for the rest of the show.

Towards the end GWAR completed their journey through Hell where they met Jewcifer. Jewcifer is the Jewish Satan who looks like a huge robot with a star of David chestplate. Jewcifer had a very Woody Allen-esque voice, which was pretty funny. Oderus took on Jewcifer in an epic battle, which of course Oderus won.

After the battle a slave climbed up onto the speaker stack on the side where a huge cannon was mounted. The slave then began hosing down the crowd in an extra thick bloody goo. It was fucking awesome and the crowd looked like they were extras in a horror movie - which I suppose we were in a round about way.

As I walked home, soaked in blood from head to toe, I thought about what I just saw. GWAR might put on the best show ever, it's not just a concert it's full on play with bad ass metal as the soundtrack. GWAR Ruuules!!

Fear On SNL

I've been listening to the "Evolution Of A Cro-Magnon" - the book by John Joseph of the Cro-Mags. Eventually I'll actually read the book but I recommend listening to John Joseph tell the story himself. It's a brilliant account of NYC during the 70's and 80's.

Anyway, in the book he talks about when Fear played on Saturday Night Live and all hell broke loose. I've seen bits and pieces of the video but the other day I found the whole thing. A bunch of old school punks were there including Henry Rollins and Ian MacKaye. In fact at the end you can hear Ian yell out "New York sucks!"

I'm Going To See GWAR!

Finally....

The Bed Bug Map

So I'm going to reveal a very dark time in my life. While I lived in my old apartment in South Williamsburg...I had bed bugs! It was a fucking nightmare but it made me a stronger person.

Lately I've been seeing all types of shit on the news and online about the current bed bug epidemic. So I figured I'd do my part and create a map of all the known bed bug dwellings in NYC. I figured some poor bastard moved into my old place oblivious to the hell he/she was in store for. But fear not fellow citizens - the map is here!

I had this idea back when I first was diagnosed but I obviously had bigger things to deal with at the time. So please, please, please send me addresses of known bed bug spots and I will add to the map. It is your civic duty to help out on this one. Hell, I'm doing all the work folks, I just need an address.

DO NOT abuse this map. If you think you have bed bugs then I don't want your address until it's confirmed. I will be marking both current (buggy) and previously (clean) infested apartments. People have the right to know about this shit. Plus it might get those fat fuck slumlords off their asses and actually take care of the problem.

Bank Of America - "One" by U2 (WTF?) + David Cross

This is the funniest/saddest thing I have ever seen in my life. It's like something straight out of "The Office" only it's completely real and completely serious. Bono must be rolling over in his grave. Oh wait, he's not dead is he - dammit!

"One bank...One card...One name that's known all over the world!" Now that's poetry kids.

David Cross covering "One...Bank"

TV On The Radio Covers They Might Be Giants

I'm not a big fan of They Might Be Giants so this is only 50% cool in my book. But if you're lucky enough to be a fan of both bands then this must be very cool - like 100% even.

New Party: Hump Day @ Lit

A new party has popped up on the scene called Hump Day. They're having this little gathering at Lit, not sure if it's upstairs or downstairs. They have $2 drinks from 11:30 - 12:30, which is an ok deal but in the days of open bars it doesn't sound so great.

RIP - Peter Boyle

Band Alert: Cobra Khan

About a week ago I was screwing around on MySpace and somehow ended up on a profile for a band called Cobra Khan. When I the page loaded a song called "Wrapped In Plastic" came on...and it was pretty awesome. It's kinda punk, kinda pop, kinda rock, it just works somehow - without sounding like emo. Cobra Khan is a band from New Zealand, so we'll probably never get to see them live. I listened to the rest of the songs and wasn't nearly as impressed. They didn't suck but weren't nearly as good as "Wrapped In Plastic".

Denny Blaze In NYC

Our favorite homeboy visited NYC to hang out with VH1 for some reason. The 15 minutes might be long gone but Denny just ain't giving up. That's called persistance people and you could learn something from the Average Homeboy.

Rated-X

Saturday night I rounded up the troops for a night of debauchery at Rated-X. The occasion was the 1-year anniversary of Brooklyn Ski Club. As you may know BSC started out reviewing parties so it made sense to celebrate at Rated-X.

Before we headed over to Luke & Leroy a few of us hung out at my place and had a few drinks. Unfortunately I chose to start the night with red wine. If you know the history of my alcoholism then you'll know many of the horror stories start with the words "red" and "wine". I can drink an endless supply of beer and liquor and still function but a few glasses of red and I'm useless.

So after we went through a bottle of red wine we jumped in a cab and headed to Luke & Leroy. When we got there the upstairs wasn't even open yet and the crowd downstairs was pretty sparse. But it was still early so I hoped for the best.

Once the upstairs opened up we headed towards the stage and hung out there. Not long after the place started to fill up pretty fast. Before I knew it the L&L was packed and everyone was dancing. I was pretty trashed and at some point I ended up on stage with a few people I was with. There are rumors that even I was dancing but I can't confirm that.

How the night ended I'm not really sure but I know my internal alarm went off. In the old days when I got "too drunk" I would keep partying and stupid shit would happen. These days my body just kind of says fuck you and I have the dire urge to leave. I'm pretty sure that's exactly what happened - all I know for sure is I was in a cab with my girlfriend, my roommate, and my friend headed cross town. When I got out of the car I went home and everyone else went to another bar.

What I remember of the night was really fun and if I can actually round up some people again it could be happening in the near future. But next time make sure I don't go near any fucking wine!

Party With Us At Rated-X Tonight

Tonight I'm heading over to Rated-X to celebrate the 1-year anniversary of Brooklyn Ski Club. It's not an official BSC party (there isn't one) but Michael T convinced me that a celebration was in order nonetheless. So come out and party with us tonight.

If you hurry up you can still email Andy Shaw and get on the reduced list: rsvp@shawpromotion.com

The Evens at NYU 12/7

A few weeks ago a friend of mine introduced me to The Evens. It's the latest from Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat, Fugazi) and Amy Farina (The Warmers). He knows I'm a huge Minor Threat fan so he thought I might dig it. After I heard the album I thought it was pretty good but way more Fugazi then Minor Threat. It was pretty mellow but still had a definite punk rock vibe to it.

last night that same friend invited me out to see The Evens at NYU. The tickets were only $5 so of course I went along. When we entered the venue there were activist tables lining the walls of the performance room. On the floor a punk rock marching band was performing. I forgot how weird college events could be but part of me missed all that excess bullshit.

After the "Rude" marching band cleared of the dance floor an old dude that kinda looked like Rasputin started setting up his gear. The old dude was Daniel Higgs of Lungfish and he opened with an odd little Jew's Harp ditty. It was decent but not what you would expect as an opener for Ian MacKaye.

He was joined on stage by a woman who was playing violin and other random instruments. Throughout the set both performers were doing faux India-style vocals but with nonsensical words or English. They also used a variety of unusual instruments, which they passed back and forth. Like I said, it was pretty good but a little out of place given the context.

When they left the stage Ian came out and started setting up equipment. When they came out Ian had his baritone guitar and Amy took her seat behind the drums. As soon as they started I was a bit shocked. They have a very stripped down sound (two vocals, guitar, & drums) and played fairly quietly yet they were shockingly powerful.

Ian was never known for having a great "singing" voice but the gruffness sounded pretty good, even in a quiet song. Amy shared vocal duties and she has an amazing voice which worked well against Ian's. There were a few tracks which picked up the pace a bit. On these tracks Ian got into pissed off punk mode and was basically screaming the vocals and pounding on the guitar. Of course those songs were outstanding in my book.

According to Ian they played an hour set but it seemed shorter then that. But I guess that means I had fun right? And how could you not when Ian MacKaye is on stage. And of course there was the one asshole who yelled out a Minor Threat song - Ian hates when people do that. So he launched into his "music of today, not yesterday" speech, which I think he has memorized at this point.

Overall I really enjoyed the show and highly recommend you check them out when they come around. Despite an almost acoustic sound they managed to play one hell of a punk rock show.
