Headless Horseman, Popo & Shilpa Ray Played At Pianos

Friday was the last night of the Headless Horseman residency at Pianos. The show was called "BrownOut" and was sponsored by MTV Desi. The lineup was Sunny Ali & The Kid, Android Lust, PoPo and Shilpa Ray. I've been waiting to seen HH for awhile and PoPo I've seen many times and they never disappoint. Oddly enough, I've never seen Shilpa Ray despite her playing shows all over Brooklyn for a couple years now.

I headed downtown from work and got there a little early. So I had a burger at that little hole in the wall joint down the block from Pianos and then had a $3 Newcastle at Iggy's before heading to the show. As I walked up to Pianos Fareed was standing outside. We shot the shit for a minute and he told me I should catch Sunny Ali & The Kid, which has an ex-Popo dude in it, so I headed in.

They were already playing when I walked through the door and I was into them immediately. They play country influenced punk and/or garage. Whatever you want to call it they were really fucking good. I spoke to the drummer after and they'll be playing more NYC shows soon.

After Sunny Ali & The Kid, and a couple beers, Android Lust took the stage. The band was a bunch of nerdy looking white dudes who look like they're way into World Of Warcraft and the singer was a petite Indian check. They got started and within the first 30 seconds I could tell I wasn't going to like the remaining 20 minutes of their set. I hung in there for about two songs but that's all I could take. Remember when Jada Pinkett-Smith started up that metal band? It was kinda like that but with some Flyleaf thrown in for good measure. Needless to say, I went back to Iggy's as it was still happy hour.

I headed back to Pianos just in time to catch PoPo. Like I said, I've seen PoPo a few times over the years and

Tonight: Shilpa Ray, Headless Horseman, Popo @ Piano's; Wild Yaks @ The Gutter; Darlings & Regal Degal @ Shea

Plenty of good shows tonight! I will be at Brown Out at Piano's which features Shilpa Ray, Headless Horseman and Popo. I've been trying to catch Headless Horseman for quite a while and Popo is rad. Somehow this is my first time seeing Shilpa Ray, which seems impossible.

If I wasn't at Piano's I'd be catching one of the other shows here. I'm really bummed I can't make it to the Wild Yaks show.

Tonight: Headless Horseman, DADS, Das Racist @ Piano's

Headless Horseman is playing Piano's again tonight. I haven't had a chance to see them live yet but I've heard nothing but good things and Fareed is a cool dude so I'm excited to check them out.

Also playing are DADS which is a new project from Hima (Das Racist) and Quinn (Suckers) which should be good times. Speaking of Das Racist they'll be DJing the festivities. In my experience a Das Racist DJ set can easily turn into a full on performance which would make for a pretty excellent night.

Tonight: Freelance Whales @ Pianos

CMJ darlings Freelance Whales are playing Pianos tonight. This band was without a doubt my favorite discovery during CMJ.

They're fucking adorable. They kinda sound like Arcade Fire but much more childish and I mean that in a good, no great, way. They sound like a kids version of Arcade Fire and look like a whole band of Matt & Kims, all smiles - all the time. When I first saw them I turned do my friend and said "I have the sudden urge to go see Where The Wild Things Are" meaning they are a live soundtrack to a childhood adventure.

I know none of this makes any sense but go see them and you'll get what I'm driving at. If they can figure out how to properly mic these kids on a big stage they will be huge.

That said, they're playing what might just be their last little NYC show, depending on how this tour goes. I'd suggest going to this one. $10 sucks but it's worth it in this case.

Tonight: Hoarsebox @ Piano's

Awhile back I mention a band from Ireland called Hoarsebox I randomly stumbled upon. The first time I heard them was live on the radio and they were damn good. They just hopped the pond for some shows in NYC, 3 actually, and tonight they play Piano's. Stop by and give them a listen.

The Horrors & Schoolyard Heroes At Pianos 5/5

I started my Tuesday at a screening of the new Comedy Central show "Lil' Bush." They had these amazing little hamburgers (I ate 3!) and gave out gift bags with South Park DVDs. After that we headed to the movies and saw Pirates 3 and guess what? It sucked, don't waste your money.

After that I raced over to Pianos for a "secret" Horrors gig. In all honestly I was more excited to see Schoolyard Heroes so I got there early (is 12:30 ever early?) but still missed the first couple of songs. When I gt to Pianos I walked into one of the loudest rooms ever. It actually hurt to listen but I did because Schoolyard Heroes are damn good.

They sound quite a bit different live then they do recorded. The female vocals are screechier and the male vocals are growlier. But that didn't really change my opinion of them. At first the room was warming up to them but a few songs in people were starting to dance and bop up and down. As the crowd got into it the band became more and more animated. Pretty soon the singer was on the floor writhing around.

When they finished there was a whole room of new fans. I actually felt sorry for the Horrors because that's a hard act to follow...but apparently I don't know shit. I grabbed a beer in between sets and some fucking stage hand almost spilled it as he unnecessarily pushed his way through the crowd (dick!).

Then the Horrors came on. I knew they were young but these fuckers looked like they were 15. Then they started playing and I immediately noticed something - these little shits are a punk band. You would never know it from their album but they're straight up late '70s style punk rock. Then the crazy fuck of a singer started doing his thing.

First he's hanging from the pipe on the ceiling. Then he's tearing up the light filters and fucking with the light arrangement. After that he tears out a chunk of sound foam - the dude was bent on destruction. A few songs in and the singer climbs the pipe across the room to the middle of the floor where he has his feet on peoples shoulders for balance.

He drops down and heads back on stage and a few minutes later is down on the floor again running into everyone. Normally people wouldn't stand for this but the music combined with the build up made it all make perfect sense. This crazy English shit head was fucking shit up and it was awesome. I felt like I was back at CBGBs again and that means I had fun.

Eventually he made his way to the back of the room and grabbed a ladder. He drug the ladder to the center of the floor and climbed up and sang from his perch. You could tell that The Horrors are a band used to playing larger venues and were taking advantage of the small space at Pianos.

While the antics made for a highly entertaining show the music was pretty average. They're a decent band but the live show is the reason to go see them. And you really should go see them if only for that reason. This is an old school punk band mislabeled as some indie goth shit. The point is they put on one hell of a punk show. All you old CBGB heads should ignore the NME hype (which I know turns you off) and go see this band because there aren't many bands like this these days.

The Horrors show at Pianos was without question one of the most fun shows I've been to in a very long time. I'm not sure how this band can pull off some of this shit in a large venue but if you have a chance to see them somewhere small drop everything and go - trust me.
