Sisters & Sundelles Playing Summer Screen Tomorrow (FREE)

Summer Screen is good fun but they always wait until the last minute to announce the bands. I'm not really sure what the strategy is here but nonetheless they've got some good bands playing tomorrow.

Tomorrow is the first night of Summerscreen, our free outdoor film series in McCarren Park (on the ballfields across the tennis courts from the Automotive High School, and across North 12th Street from the Turkey's Nest). You should make a night of it: gates open at 6pm for you to lay out your blanket, wait until dark for our opening night film, Say Anything, and in the meantime enter our Fandango contest and graze the selections from our local food and drink vendors: Sixpoint beer, and food from Pizza MotoAsia DogsPeople's Pops,San Loco, and more on a rotating basis.

While you sit, eating, drinking, waiting for the Peter Gabriel song to come on and for your friends you're saving space for to show, you'll also be entertained by a couple of our favorite Brooklyn bands: the Sundelles, at 6:15, and Sisters, at 7:15. Pretty much everything you like about living in Brooklyn will be happening at Summerscreen tomorrow night, then.

As always, SummerScreen is a free event. Bring a blanket or a chair -- we hope to see you there!

Williamsburg Walks

The L Magazine just announced the dates for this summers Williamsburg Walks, June 26 & 27. If you're not familiar this is when they shut down Bedford to cars and you get to walk on the road and buy stuff from vendors. It's during Northside Festival so random bands will be playing acoustic sets on the sidewalks, like gypsy's (hold onto your wallet and don't bring your children). Vendors, activities and music all day. It's like a fair but on the street, a "street fair" if you will...and you better.

Wavves Playing Free L Magazine Party @ Brooklyn Bowl

The L Magazine is celebrating Fat Tuesday with an indie rock show. Kinda weird right? Oh well, it's free and since SoCo is a sponsor I'm guessing their will be some kind of free drinks. To start the festivities there will be a parade complete with floats, costumes, and beads (show your tits!). It all starts at McCarren Park and then ends up at Brooklyn Bowl. You gotta RSVP to get in.

It'll be just like this, only colder and more hipstery.

Tonight: Wild Yaks Play Summerscreen

Tonight kicks off the first of the L Magazine Summerscreen events. The movie tonight is Reality Bites, which is kinda cool I guess. More importantly though the Wild Yaks are playing before the movie! The show is free and taking place at the ball fields across from the Turkey's Nest. You know what that means right? Big Buds to-go!

Northside Festival Starts Today

I gotta be honest, when I first heard about Northside Festival I thought it would just be the same old Brooklyn bands that play every other night. And sure, plenty of those bands are involved but there's a whole lot more going on too. I was just checking out the shows and they're fucking awesome for the most part. Plus there's free beer every night and you can ride your bike from show to show. That's awesome.

You have one more hour to get a badge for $45, which ain't bad at all. Or you can just try getting into shows the old fashioned way... asking PR people to put you on the list. On that note, if someone would be so kind as to donate a badge to Brooklyn Ski Club I would be happy to cover some shows. Normally, I'd cough up the $45 but I just moved and my bank account is a few thousand dollars smaller now.

2009 Summerscreen Lineups

I've only been to one of these but it's a pretty good time. We snuck in a few 40's and hung out at the pool while Wet Hot American Summer was on the big screen. This year they're moving it to the softball fields, which may be an improvement (plus we can get "to-go" cups from Turkey's Nest!).

The L Magazine’s popular Summerscreen film series returns to Williamsburg this year, despite the loss of the McCarren Park Pool. Instead, we’ll be showing an excellent lineup of movies in another section of McCarren: the ballfields in the Southwest corner of the park.

The films will be shown at dusk on Wednesday nights starting July 8th and area restaurants will be on hand to sell food and beverages. Admittance is absolutely free.

This year’s lineup of films includes:

July 8: Reality Bites

July 15: Evil Dead 2

July 22: 24 Hour Party People

July 29: Wild at Heart

August 5: Fame

August 12: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Tonight: Pow Wow, Darlings, Sundelles @ Glasslands

Pow Wow played our last show at Red Star and they were awesome! Darlings are playing our next show at Red Star on May 28th (more on that soon). Both bands were named in The L Mag's 8 Bands To Hear 2009. That's a whole lot of reasons to go to this show. Plus from what I've heard Sundelles are pretty great live too.
