Tonight: Wild Yaks, Scary Mansion, Friends @ Cameo

Wild Yaks are playing with Scary Mansion, Chica Vas and Friends. Have you heard Friends yet? I just listened to them a few minutes ago and my brain is still tingling. They're really, really, really good. I mean, I haven't seen them live yet but the songs they have online are beautiful. Go.

Wild Yaks Played Cameo

On Friday I was checking out the old Facebook feed and I saw a post from Wild Yaks. It basically said they're back (they broke up in June) and were playing that night at Cameo. Prior to the break up Wild Yaks were my favorite Brooklyn band to see live so I was pretty excited to hear the news. I spread the word and easily rounded up some folks to head to the show. Turns out I wasn't the only excited about another chance to see Wild Yaks.

As with any party/show/event on N. 6th we started the night at Zablowski's for cheap pre-show drinks. After the gang all arrived and sucked down a few rounds we headed to Cameo. When we walked in I saw Martin, the drummer, in the crowd so I knew we had some time before they would be playing. What I didn't know was the band that was scheduled before them didn't even get started yet.

I headed to the back room anyway and noticed that the attendance list for whoever this band was was super huge. I walked into the performance room and it was insanely packed. I grabbed one of the free CDs on the table before the door on my way in. I pulled it out of my pocket to see who the band was, The Wicked Tomorrow. On first impression the band was as bad as their name but it turns out it was just the first song. After that the girl/guy duo grew on me and by the end I thought they were alright. The jam packed room seemed to dig them a lot more than me though.

I was dipping in and out of the band room and hanging with friends in Loving Cup, it was also the only place to get a beer that night. Eventually the Yaks headed back and started setting up. They looked a little different though. The only familiar faces were Martin on drums and Rob on vocals and

Wild Yaks Aren't Dead, Playing Cameo Tonight

According to the Wild Yaks Facebook page they're back in action and playing Cameo tonight! I've been seeing comments coming through the Facebook feed from some of the band members that alluded to a reunion but until today nothing was confirmed. I kinda figured they'd be back at some point but this comes a bit sooner than expected. Today is a good day. Go see Wild Yaks!

Tonight: The Last Wild Yaks Show Ever!?

CIMG5756

The band that I've probably seen live more times in the last 2 years than any other is calling it quits. Tonight is what they're claiming will be the last show they ever play. For the record, they've made this claim before - several times, actually. Will this be it for Wild Yaks? I doubt it but at the very least it will be awhile before you get to see them again. If it is in fact the last show I'm super bummed because I can't go. I destroyed my knee and can barely walk and therefore a Wild Yaks show is simply dangerous. So do yourself a favor and go, for me, if not for your own satisfaction. Farewell drunken troubadours and broken guitars.

Of course you don't believe me that this is the last Wild Yaks show ever. You think I'm your raving uncle? Like you have company over and I'm just talking and talking in the backyard and your guests are like, what's all that racket? And you're like, that's just my raving uncle.

Of course I am not done playing music. As long as this pervasive heart ache continues, as long as love threatens to squeeze my little heart to lovely death I will have no choice but to go on singing this joyous, lonesome lament.

I'll sing to a rock. To a tree. Haven't you seen me do it?

Of course I am not finished playing music with Martin and Dan. Do you know those beautiful men? Am I not the luckiest man that ever lived? I got to ride the white horse long into the night with world class, beautiful tragic fools.

I've been fighting so long. Believing that some gesture, some approach to beauty, could somehow make up for the all those times in my life that I felt like a loser. All those times I felt like I deserved more. Deserved better. But I have given up that war.

We cannot save the past!

I have laid down all my curses. Put them in the earth to wait for time to mellow their poison.

Tonight: Black Lips DJing All Over Town

OK, really just in two spots - Cameo and Motor City. I will most likely end up at Cameo because it's not in Manhattan. Anyway, those dudes are insane fucks with pretty good taste in music so both should be good fun.

Akudama Played Cameo 4/10

Kate checked out Akaduma at Cameo on Saturday.
--------------------------

So Saturday night I headed to Cameo to check out the band Akudama. If you’re ever looking for this place it’s behind the Lovin’ Cup. And by that I mean walk through the restaurant all the way to the back, past the bathrooms, through heavy dark curtains, text the word ‘Indigo’ to the number 22922 and then open a door that looks like an emergency exit. You will then enter a tiny room that on Saturday, happened to be decorated like my Junior Prom.

I arrived around 12:15, just in time to hear

Tonight: LOST; Das Racist Performing Paul's Boutique

The premier episode of the final season of LOST is tonight. I will be home watching because this is the best show ever (non-comedy). But if you're leaving the house tonight I highly recommend heading to Cameo for Das Racist. They'll be performing the Beastie Boys classic Paul's Boutique in it's entirety. I saw Das Racist for the 3rd time last night and they're always good fun.

Tonight: Gunfight! & We Are Country Mice @ Cameo; Cerebral Ballzy @ PA; Fucked Up w/WK & Viv Girls

It's a good night for rock n' roll, especially punk. If you're in the Burg you've got two solid choices (Bikes In The Kitchen & Crashin' In parties) right across the street from each other. N.6th is the place to be tonight. There's also an insane Fucked Up show at the Masonic Temple. I guess all Fucked Up shows are insane but this time they've got Andrew WK and Vivian Girls as additional band members.

Tonight: Raccoon Fighter @ Pete's; Darlings @ Cameo

Go check out my homeboys Raccoon Fighter (check out the song "Rollin' Wheel") at Pete's Candy Store tonight. Tonight's show is free, so you can check them out before you pay to see them with The Drums and The Sundelles at Glasslands next Friday. After that head to Cameo for Teddy Blanks, Senors Of Marseille, and Darlings. It's a good night to cruise around on your bike.

Sigmund Droid Playing Cameo This Saturday

Brooklyn Ski Club chums, Sigmund Droid, will be playing Cameo on Saturday. It's been awhile since they played (they've been recording) so this should be a lot of fun. The bad news is I'm going to be out of town, so let me know how awesome it was when I get back.
