The Germs Recap

The show started VERY late. I was supposed to attend the second set, which was supposed to start at 10:30. I got there thinking the band just finished set one. They actually just started the first set. When we entered the Magik Markers were playing - holy shit do they suck. Complete rubbish. My theory is that these are super scenesters that are trying to be avant-garde or some bullshit. This band plays Manhattan alot and people go to see them... I have no idea why. After a few songs(?) they finally stopped. The 45-minute set-up for the Germs followed.

After a long wait the band appeared with the new singer/actor. I wanted to hate this bastard, just because the idea of an actor who played the singer becoming the actual singer is absurd. But this guy was pretty fuckin good. Although it did seem as if he was playing the part of "rock star" at times. Pat seemed like he was having the time of his life. The crowd wasn't half as crazy as I expected but I suppose that had something to do with the large contingency of 50 year olds in the crowd. All in all, this was very fucking cool.

Bridge and Tunnel Crowd

Last night I was invited to a party for a production company at Au Bar on 58th street. I was hesitant to go because, well - it's on 58th street. We get to this place around midnight and there is a line of wanna-be pop stars trying to get in. The doorman was quite the asshole and gave us a hard time but eventually let us in when a friend came and told him we were "cool."

The crowd inside was dressed in the finest of yuppie-prep attire. It wasn't very difficult to figure out that these people were from the upper regions of New Jersey and the outer regions of Brooklyn and Queens. Under normal circumstances I would have left after ten minutes, but when people keep handing me free booze I tend to stick around.

Eventually, I couldn't take it anymore and snuck out. I headed down to Rififi and stood in line for about 10 minutes. The place looked pretty good, which hasn't been happening lately - what with the raids and all. So anyway I get inside and get a call from a friend who is outside waiting for me in a cab. Ten minutes in line and I didnt even get a beer. I did manage to get one shot off though.

The Germs!

Hey, you know me by now. I hate to pay to get into places, but this time I have - and I won't even complain. Tomorrow night The Germs are playing at the Continental. Do you understand how crazy that is? Here's why:

1. The Germs broke up in 1980
2. The Germs are one of the best/most influential punk bands ever
3. It's at the fucking Continental - the second most punk rock venue in NYC (that still exists)

Trust me, even if you aren't familiar with The Germs go to this show. You know the weirdo fem guitar player that joined Nirvana towards the end - well that's Pat Smear. He's in the Germs.

Man this is going to be good!

Cocaine Corner

The other day I was looking at my various RSS feeds and I noticed something drug related on Gawker. So I clicked to see what it was all about. Low and behold - Cocaine Corner. Now I'm not one for the Coca, but this blog is excellent. You have to read the Best Places to Get Coke post. It's fucking genius, an absolute must read.

The Subways & Stuff Magazine

About last night:

The night started out at Northsix around 9:30 or so. The event was the Stuff Magazine "It" Edition party. Two bands played, the first was called Breakup Breakdown. They were decent enough, the faster punky tunes were actually good. In all honesty though the reason anyone was there was to see the new "It" band, The Subways. Most of you have heard "Rock N' Roll Queen" by now, so you're probably aware of these guys. I didn't really expect a whole lot but they were incredible. The energy the band performed with was amazing. It was so punk rock - in spirit, if not in sound.

The overall vibe of the Stuff party wasn't what I expected. I'm a subscriber to the magazine and I always see these pics from thier parties and they look great. I always wanted to attend one. Well, I have now and it wasn't all that. The party was a far cry from the model-fest I was expecting. Not glam at all, but then I guess it shouldn't be if it's in Brooklyn. The open bar was top notch though... if you were fortunate enough to have the Stuff wristband (which I did, thanks Mark).

After the show we hopped in a cab and headed into Manhattan for The Bravery after party at Luke + Leroy. Huge mistake - not fun at all. The music was horrible. The DJ was spinning weird 80's dance shit (not the good kind - if there is such a thing) and hip-hop. The crowd didn't seem too impressed, although some people were dancing. I have a feeling that had something to do with the open bar - which we missed by about ten minutes. We only lasted about an hour and then it was back to Brooklyn.

The Shorebirds

Last night I went to Zebulon in Williamsburg to see a friend of a friend's band. They were called The Shorebirds. I was pleasantly surprised by the show. They had to play a "quiet show" because Zebulon is a Jazz joint and they aren't into loud rock n' roll. Despite this they weren't bad, I didn't love it but I didn't feel the urge to leave either. Anyway I snapped a few pictures and found their MySpace page.

Cool Tour Ahead.

Cake, Gogol Bordello, Tegan & Sara, and some fucking comedian:

I hate Cake, I don't understand how people like that dry, emotionless crap. So I couldn't care less (that's right - "couldn't care less" it's not "could care less" - that makes no sense, stop saying it) about Cake and the comedian guy. But Gogol is fucking awesome and Tegan & Sara are excellent song writers. The question is - will I go to this show? Maybe, it's clearly too expensive ($35-ish) but I can write it off. Maybe I'll score some freebies, that's about the only way I'll go. But if you have the money I highly recommend this. Hopefully, when this hits the city Gogol & the girls will do a side show in some dingy shithole - that would be ideal.

Not On The List

So yesterday I posted that I would be headed to the Islands/Isles show. Well, there's been a change in plans. After direct communication with one of the band members AND posting to WhatsUp AND sending out to the text list, I still wasn't put on the list. OK, now I know I sound like a little bitch but come on man. I probably told more people about that shit then they did I can't even get a spot on the list? That's horseshit.

Instead I will be seeing some band at some bar down the street from me. The guy in the band is a friend of a friend. Yippy! It's free so therefore I can bypass the whole list thing. But fuck it, I'm definetly on the list for The Bravery after party tomorrow night and I might be on The Subways/Stuff party list tomorrow as well. Look for pictures from one or both.

Tomorrow's Agenda

7PM
Deli Magazine one year anniversary
@ Tonic
107 Norfolk Street between Delancey and Rivington
Free

Free food, photo exhibition, and subway performers at the pre-party at Subtonic.

Ok so this has two parts to it. Part one is a pre-party, which has free food, performers, and artwork. The second half costs $10 - so I don't fucking care. You can go, but you won't see me there.

There is also a good show tomorrow, The Islands and The Isles. By the way I'm sick of bands with similar names playing together. It's just plain stupid. I mean come on Wolf Parade and Wolf Eyes (I made that up, no idea if they played together). I know I'm not the only one who's noticed this trend. This does give me hope that one day Iron & Wine and Iron Maiden will do a show together. Anyway, The Islands are the latest version of The Unicorns, and they were pretty good so I'll assume the new band is as well. Here's the flyer. It's shitty and hard to read but click it, it should link.

I just had a nice long blog all ready to post and Firefox crashed on me. Damn it. There's no way I'm re-writing that shit. Sorry.
